Would you ever name your baby after yourself?

Would you ever consider naming a DD after yourself? Or a DS after your DP? Have you, or do you know anybody who has? I can't work out if this is nice (name the baby after somebody who they will love/loves them and who will hopefully be an inspiration to them (!)) or egotistical.

Terrible idea on a practical level (post, bills etc) and also on a weirdy Freudian level.

Seriously - just buy one of those matching Mummy 'n' Baby tshirts if you must insist on forcing your child to be viewed by the world as some sort of extension of you.

Well, DS1 is named after DH and both his grandparents. I somehow wouldn't call a girl after me though, don't know why.

There are thousands of names to choose from so why anyone would choose to call their child either their own or their partner's name is utterly beyond me.

I don't like it, for both girls and boys. There are hundreds of names out there, why use one that you're already using.

I have friends, lets call them Molly and Kyle. They have a little girl called Molly so we call them big Molly and little Molly. Big Molly is pregnant, sex yet to be confirmed. If they have a boy they are calling him...yep you've guessed it...Kyle. So the will be big Molly, little Molly, big Kyle and little Kyle. Poor poor children are going to get teased at school.

I know a family that one son is called the same as the father and one is named after the mother ( it is a name that can be male or female) but I think it's very strange as they have big George and small George and big Alex and small Alex

Second name yes, my DD1 shares my middle name which I then also share with my own DM. If we had a boy his middle name would be DH's first name in keeping with tradition on DH's side of family (DH has his own dads first name as a middle name). I wouldn't do it for first name though, and the middle name thing is because of family tradition so maybe not quite what you meant anyway OP. :)

It was a family thing for us, in my defence, plus I loved the name. So I didn't mind. And they all go by different nicknames anyway.

Dd2 has my surname as her middle name just to ' carry the name on a generation' It is a girls name btw.

If it's a cultural tradition, I think it's quite nice. One of my friends is (names changed) Viviana, as is her mother and her grandmother etc. Her first born daughter will also be Viviana. I suppose it could be considered unfair on the second born daughter, though...

If it is just a preference I wouldn't or but I might think it a little egoistical.

I know and DM Joanna and a DS Joe too, Joe's middle name is his father's first name.

DD's middle name is my first name. It is a traditional family name carried by eldest daughters. There is no way on this fine Earth that I would have been allowed to forget if DD's hadn't had it in her name. I also quite like it. Sounds better in her combo of names. There is another name that the eldest sons of eldest sons have too.

I know a family where all the boys have the same first name, then they all have different abbreviations, NNs, use middle names etc. Loons.

My DS has my DP's name for a middle name, I think middle names are a different proposition.

It's just I like my name - it's classic, simple, not cutesy or frilly or overly popular - and I'm completely at a loss for what I would call a DD (not even TTC at the minute but hope to soon!).

My DSS has his Dad's name as his middle name which I think is nice.
I don't think that I would have exactly the same names as it would get too confusing, but I know a Catherine with a daughter Katie which I like.

If it's traditional (if DH was Richard Smith XII DS would be Richard) or a middle name I think it's a great idea.

If you're called Keith & Barry and want to have Keith Jr & Barry Jr running around it's a bit odd. But that could just be because I hate my name!

My ds1 has my maiden name (a boys name) as his middle name and my ds2s first name is Dhs middle name

Oddly enough DS2 has his dads name backwards, i never realised until he was @ 4 yrs old [thicko]

I know a good few people that do this - Joseph - Joe, John - Jack, a few Catherines - Katies. Its not my cup of tea but its pretty common where I am. My 3 daughters have middle names after relatives - granny, great granny etc. My middle name is my Mums name.

I gave dd1 my middle name as her first name. It's a traditional, pretty name. It is also my Nan's and my cousin's middle name and was my great grandmothers first name, so I think of it as a family name rather than 'my' name.

I know a family who have 5 generations of a name, let's say Daniel. It went; old old Dan, old Dan, Dan, young Dan and wee Dan.

I only know of one woman who has called her dd the same name as her, it was quite a dated name and it just seemed a bit egotistical tbh.

If I had a ds, I probably would have used dh's name as a middle name. It's in my late dad's name and my db so that would have been quite nice. No way would I ever have used any if my names for my dds though even though I like them all.

I wouldn't do it as a first name, but as a middle name it's fine, I think.

Mind you I called DD after me - by mistake! I used an old form of my name that sounds completely different, and didn't realise it till a few months after I had her. No one has ever commented though, so it's not widely known.
(if I had realised I would have called her something different for her own identity IYKWIM)

DON'T DO IT!!!

My DF named me after my DM and it's a nightmare. Not only is the name traditionally impossibly to abbreviate (we now both go by names derived from opposite ends of our Christian names) but growing up and as a young adult...
"Please may I speak to Ribena"
"Which one, mother or daughter?"
"Ribena Fiend"
"Yes I appreciate that, which one, mother or daughter!"
"Erm, which one is a driver"
"Both"
...you get the general gist right?!... DP and I will NOT be inflicting this on a DD.
