Jilly Cooper Novel/Roman Emperor venn diagram

DH and I are stuck for a boys name shortlist for DC2. We had no boys names first time around and luckily DC1 was a girl. DC2 is due in three weeks or so and we have absolutely no boys names that we agree on and are driving each other nuts.

DH thinks all the names I like are too public schoolboy and like characters from Jilly Cooper novels (admittedly Rupert would be my first choice).

He only seems to like Roman Emperor names as the few suggestions he has made (he prefers just to say no to all of mine) are things like Augustus, Aurelius and Caesar which I think take an awful lot of carrying off.

So are there any names out there that would cross over on a Jilly Cooper/classical roman or greek venn diagram?

Lysander
Marcus
Hadrian
Marius
Justin

Any good?

RancerDoo · 12/10/2012 21:47

Hector (lysander Hawkleys brother)
August (ok this isnt either categoy, but it could be)
Constant (as august)

dearprudence · 12/10/2012 21:48

Isa.

Ohsiena · 12/10/2012 21:51

Marcus
Julian
Anthony
Bruno

EdithWeston · 12/10/2012 21:52

Alexander (to be known as Xan) from Octavia - not as far out as Lysander, good Greek origins, very Jilly nn, and would work with a later Rupert should you have further DSes and wear him down a bit.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/10/2012 21:53

Rupert is yummy.

I think Horace is due a revival. Love Hector. Justin is good too. And am rather fond of Julian.

Lambzig · 12/10/2012 22:39

I love Lysander, but DH has already said no to that along with Julian.

Hector is good, but what would you shorten it to?

I know an awful (adult) Marcus.

Not fond of Justin (cannot get past that ridiculous what do you call a man with a small penis joke)

The Hector I know is Hex to his friends...

mrsXsweet · 13/10/2012 09:29

I LOVE Rupert but my husband won't consider it either :(

evamummy · 13/10/2012 22:18

I love Quentin, Tristan, Thaddeus and Constantine.

The problem with Hector is its meaning (to bully) and the nickname Heck Grin

bigbluebump · 13/10/2012 22:38

Love Lysander. Also Aurelius, Julius, Quentin, Hugo and Clement. Or how about Darius?

MadBusLadyHauntsTheMetro · 14/10/2012 19:22

Aurelia is lovely for a girl, might be one to keep in mind.

Atticus
Julius
Marius
Gaius (pr Guy-us I would say, but double-check with an actual classicist!)
Magnus
Lucius
Cornelius
Titus
Septimus
Constantine
Theophilus

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/10/2012 19:26

Tristan, Atticus and Thaddeus all gorgeous. I wanted a Thaddeus but dp thought I'd gone mad!

MadBusLadyHauntsTheMetro · 14/10/2012 19:31

Ooh ooh - Sirius!

MadBusLadyHauntsTheMetro · 14/10/2012 19:31

(RemusLupin made me think of it.)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/10/2012 20:15

:)

Can we add Remus to the list too?

Lambzig · 15/10/2012 16:13

I like Thaddeus particularly and quite a few of these, but think they might be quite hard to pull off.

Am losing patience with DH as anything I suggest gets shot down while he doesnt bother to suggest anything himself.

Am hoping baby will just come out looking like a ........

Hector shortens to Flippin Wink

lambethlil · 15/10/2012 16:30

Max
Rufus
Felix

AgathaTrunchbull · 15/10/2012 19:29

MadBusLady: yep, you're right on the pronunciation of Gaius, but wouldn't advise it as a baby name. Children INEVITABLY pronounce it 'Gay-us' the first time they see it.

Decimus
Titus
Quintus
Kaeso (very, very old Roman first name!)
Numerius
Ambrose
Miltiades
Themistocles

Running out of ideas!

MoelFammau · 15/10/2012 19:36

Horatio
Tiberius
Antonius
Magnus

MoelFammau · 15/10/2012 19:58

Vilinus
Ares (Roman name for Mars)
Apollo
Caius
Cato
Cicero
Evander
Lucretius
Nicandro
Tacitus

Or just call the wee lad Roman.

RillaBlythe · 15/10/2012 23:05

Flavian.
Bevis.
Aquila.

Am attempting to channel Rosemary Sutcliff here!

Lambzig · 17/10/2012 16:17

Oh I like Rufus and Felix. Doesn't rufus mean red head though?

Wow at some of the names you are all coming up with - the benefits of a classical education I guess. Think they are a bit too roman and not enough jilly cooper though.

Sebastian

Fabian
Tristan
Augustin
