I love it too, I would spell it Louis Smile

lisaro · 01/10/2012 19:55

The correct one. Louis. Don't try to be 'yoonique'.

halloweeneyqueeney · 01/10/2012 19:56

Love the name but hate the louie spelling

howdoyouknowjenny · 01/10/2012 19:57

RayofSun · 01/10/2012 20:07

Love the name. But be prepared for people who pronounce it as Lewis!

Badgerina · 01/10/2012 20:11

Louis. I agree that people might pn it Lewis, but they'd be idiots so... Grin

MJandherdog · 01/10/2012 20:15

It's Louis.

Viviennemary · 02/10/2012 08:40

There is only one correct version. That is Louis.

CherryBlossom27 · 02/10/2012 08:43

I prefer Louis out of those two spellings. I have a Lewis but it's pronounced differently and haven't had any confusion with Lewis/Louis.

SomersetONeil · 02/10/2012 09:11

Louis - lovely name. Don't go down the Louie route.

LouMacca · 02/10/2012 09:33

Louis, without a doubt.

evamummy · 02/10/2012 11:17

Louis = Lou-is
Lou-ie = Lou-ie

So it depends on how you want it pronounced. Yes, I know the French don't pronounce their 's' at the end of words/names but the rest of the world do and will pronounce Louis as Lou-is.

evamummy · 02/10/2012 11:20

"Louis. I agree that people might pn it Lewis, but they'd be idiots so... "

Well, then there are a lot of idiots in the world because apart from the French most langugages pronounce the s of Louis. For example, the city of St Louis in Missouri is pronounced St Louis, not Lou-ee.

mayanna123 · 02/10/2012 11:27

My (German) nephew is Louis and pronounces it Lou-is as written. Seems quite popular in Germany.

I guess here (in the UK) some people prefer to pronounce it the French way (Lou-ie) but a lot of people won't, so you have to be prepared for the two pronounciations if you spell it Louis.

By spelling it Louie, an English speaker will clearly, unambiguously know how it should be pronounced.

badtime · 02/10/2012 11:50

I am pretty sure most people pronounce Louis as 'Louie', even in the UK. I used to work with someone called Louis and someone called Lewis, and nobody ever got them mixed up.

sonniebonnie · 02/10/2012 14:28

Outside of France, most people do pronounce Louis as Lou-is. So if you don't like that pronunciation, I'd spell it Louie.

Badgerina · 02/10/2012 14:50

Hmm No they don't.

Badgerina · 02/10/2012 15:01

Anyone see that recent episode of The Thick of It where Peter Mannion stumbles over a "foreign-sounding" name? How much of an idiot did he seem?

halloweeneyqueeney · 02/10/2012 16:05

"Outside of France, most people do pronounce Louis as Lou-is. So if you don't like that pronunciation, I'd spell it Louie"

I don't know any french Louis', I know loads of non french ones spent Louis and they are all pronounced louie, and never have to correct people, I think most people know how to say it its not an unusual name
