Otto? Is my DH crazy?

My DH keeps insisting that Otto should be on our short list for DC2 if this baby is a boy. He "discovered" it in his family tree which is full of awful Serbian names. Otto was the only one that was even remotely usuable.

I think it's quite ridiculous and that the poor child would be laughed out of the playground. DS1 is George.

Is my DH nuts? His first preference for a boy is Felix. Then Otto. Really??

What does the Mumsnet jury think? Ridiculous??!

Lovely as long as your surname is not Bismarck or Flick

Diamond7 · 20/09/2012 07:43

Love Otto and Otis!

Would be on our list but they don't work with our surname.

PrunellaDeVille · 20/09/2012 12:09

love it, would be on our list except used by an acquaintance - a very nice young lad with a brother Albert

Mintberry · 20/09/2012 15:20

I think Otto is a pretty cute name, actually. It's very common in Germanic countries, people will probably just assume he's got German relatives or something.

I doubt he'd get seriously bullied, it's not that ridiculous, lot's of kids have unusual names now- it's not like you're calling him Pomegranate or Felicity or something.

MarjorieAntrobus · 20/09/2012 15:33

Otto - great name.

Not too far from George either (thinking of Georg, the German form).

mayanna123 · 20/09/2012 21:48

"It's very common in Germanic countries"

No, it is not common at all - it was common about 100 years ago but is very old fashioned now, as well as being the name of a famous comedian. Bit of a comedy name actually.

jenbird · 20/09/2012 22:51

My ds's name is Otto. No one laughs at it or even thinks anything of it. He suits his name. We don't have a German connection, just liked the sound of it!

Mollydoggerson · 20/09/2012 22:56

I love it

allagory · 20/09/2012 22:57

My grandfather was Otto Gustav Maximillian. Now that's a name with gravitas! he was German, of course.

LikeCandy · 21/09/2012 07:14

I think your DH has great taste, Felix and Otto are both on my 'list'.
But Otto is the stoner school bus driver from the Simpsons and Felix has the cat food connection - so I think my DH will veto both!

emmyloo2 · 21/09/2012 07:33

Jenbird - I love that you have an Otto! My husband is obsessed with this name I tell you.

How old is your Otto (if you don't mind me asking) and what have the reactions been?

George is not a dull name!!

I also love Otto and do names really need to 'go together'? Think George & Otto sounds rather lovely Smile

ChicMama25 · 21/09/2012 07:46

Otto sounds like a cat...

diddl · 21/09/2012 14:13

I think Otto is a fab name.

Like Felix as well.

squoosh · 21/09/2012 14:56

Notto

jenbird · 21/09/2012 22:07

Emmylou - my Otto is 2. Reactions are generally positive. I think once yoU name child people forget about their feelings towards the name.

persephoneplum · 22/09/2012 06:23

Otto is on my shortlist for boy #3 and I have a Felix and a Theodore.

I know a 4 year old Otto and don't think it's even remotely weird or laughable and neither does anyone else in our circles - he's just Otto. Depends where you live though - we're inner-city people, lots of hipsters around, so even the name Zephyr is normal.

persephoneplum · 22/09/2012 06:25

Just to add - the Otto we know has a brother Oliver. There's no reason George and Otto don't go together any more than Oliver and Otto.

Frikadellen · 22/09/2012 09:32

I love Otto dh and I had it as a possibility for boys names with ours but 3 girls and 1 boy who looked nothing like an " Otto"

pumpkinsweetie · 22/09/2012 09:34

Yes

wildpoppy · 22/09/2012 10:00

Love it. Would be normal in our multicultural section of London.

emmyloo2 · 22/09/2012 12:11

Oh goodness - I can't believe there are positive reactions! This will encourage my DH even more. My favorites at the mOment are barnaby and Albert.

Persophone - I just saw your post and I adore your son's names. They are both on my list, so the fact you are considering Otto is quite positive!

Aw thanks emmyloo :) :) I really love and adore their names so the pressure really is on to find the perfect name for our third boy.

My shortlist is the result of many years of honing so I like to think they are my very best. Otto is absolutely lovely - loaded with quirk and character - it's zesty in a good way. Unlike you, my problem is my DH - he only likes Wolfgang and my taste runs more conservative than that.

I love Albert!

diddl · 22/09/2012 12:40

Like Barnaby as well.

Diamond7 · 22/09/2012 14:00

For a boy our first choice is Albert (at present). We also love Otto and Otis but have Ottilie (nn Otti) as our no 1 girls name.

So can't have Otto as if DC is a DD then we can't have Otto and Otti. DH thinks we could have an Otis and an Otti. I'm not sure.

Also as mentioned Otto doesnt work with our surname or chosen middle name.

So difficult.
