What do yout think about Ellen and Elsie and which do you prefer? I like both but have rservations about both. Ellen - is it a tad boring compared to some names out there? Elsie - is it a bit over the top granny chic or pretentious?

Any other suggestions very welcome. We are looking for something that will stand the test of time.

I don't get Edith

For a baby girl it's just ugly. Nearly as bad as Vera, Doris, Ivy.

Ellen makes me think "dull and sullen". Now if I had been named Ellen I would feel very short-changed that I hadn't been given the grander Eleanor.

Elsie I'm not really keen on, it sounds too much like an abbreviation to me.

So I would choose from Eleanor or Elsa, both pretty but elegant names that yield the more casual short or pet forms.

Call her Elizabeth and shorten to Elsie.
