Asking on behalf of a close friend. She loves this name but has no Welsh connections. Would people think odd?

Not at all. It's a pretty name.

TudorJess · 16/09/2012 19:32

I think Seren is more of an English fashion than a Welsh one. Usually by those with a Welsh connection, but I can't see any problem if there's no Welsh connection at all.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 19:34

Seren is lovely. IMO you dont need a connection to the origins to use a name!

woollyjo · 16/09/2012 19:46

My girls (one of whom is a Seren) have English, Irish and Welsh names between them, we don't know our heritage so have covered all of the obvious bases, too late to have a 4th for the Scottish name but our surname does that (baby girl 4 would have been an Isla, shame she only existed in my imagination).

dreamingofsun · 16/09/2012 19:48

welsh people use english names, as do the scottish, so why shouldn't she use a welsh one if she is english?

greenhill · 16/09/2012 19:50

Has she seen Abadas on CBeebies? Seren is a very cute singing bat with a Welsh accent.

There are loads of Welsh Serens, but I've not heard it around here yet.

squoosh · 16/09/2012 19:54

Not odd at all. It's such a pretty name.

stowsettler · 17/09/2012 14:22

Not at all. Being Welsh, it's quite common here but presumably still pretty unusual in England. It's lovely and I would consider it if nipper is a girl, but his/her already has a cousin Seren...

Numbthumbs · 17/09/2012 14:25

I LOVE Seren, its just the most gorgeous name.
I only found out about it after i had DD, who is Erin and we arent irish.

Im 22 weeks pg with DC2 and if its a girl would love to use Seren as DP is welsh but Erin and Seren just sounds a bit wierd Grin

herecomesthsun · 17/09/2012 15:48

Serena or Selena, possible alternaties?

SoupDragon · 17/09/2012 16:00

I have a Seren. She is, technically. 1/4 Welsh but I have no Welsh connections and we are in England (and DSs have Irish and Scottish names : and i have no claim to those either!)

Dogsmom · 17/09/2012 17:47

We're considering Seren too and have no welsh connections, for us it's the meaning as it's 'star' and my name means 'star' in hebrew (Esther)

EverlongYouAreGoldAndOrange · 17/09/2012 18:25

Very pretty.

Didn't even know it was welsh.

siilk · 17/09/2012 18:33

Very pretty name. I live in Wales and it is used a bit. Means star.
