Any views on our current short list for a girl? Love granny-esque, punchy, downstairs at Downton Abbey type names if you can give me any further ideas!

I would choose Audrey as Bess' sister's name, as it sounds more distinctive than either Rose or Lois because the soft 's' sound isn't repeated.

Thanks Gwennan! Audrey is my first choice but DH less convinced due to a many middle aged one we know -I am trying to get him to imagine it on a gorgeous toddle and a lovely young woman and I think he is coming round!

I love most of your suggestions, thanks. Can't use some as friends and famiky have got there first or they sound bad with our surname. Loving Shirley and Mamie. Mabel, Sadie and Nancy are definitely on our longer list (I can imagine MIL going bonkers about both Audrey and Mabel- but you can't please everyone!).

Really like Audrey, my favourite of your shortlist. I don't think of Lois as a turn of the century scullery maid type name, though that might be because I know 2 four year olds called Lois. Rose is a lovely name but quite plain compared to Audrey.

Gwennan has come up with some good suggestions. How about Iris, Ivy, Esther/Hester, Evelyn, Martha, Matilda.

Not keen on Audrey at all, but think rose is nice and lois is my favourite.
