I have been posting about names for hypothetical DC2 for some months [years?] now. I am now pregnant and so can now annoy the shit out of my husband discuss names, for real!

At the moment, the list is:

Boys
Albert
Arthur
Ernest (currently being rejected by DH)
Hugo
John
Felix
Edward (again rejected by DH)

Girls
Henrietta (my absolute favourite)
Elizabeth
Camilla
Edwina
Audrey

Anyone got any other suggestions or comments on the above? DS1 is George and I like old fashioned but maybe slightly quirky names. Nothing too popular.

Thanks!

Congratulations!

I love Albert, Arthur and Edward (especially love nn Ted). Hugo alwus seems a little posh/ severe for me, sorry. John is an interesting one- Gordon Brown is the only person I know of with a child called John and I thought it a little stern at first but it's a good solid name that goes well with George. Ernest is quite cool- like Ernie as a nn. How about Stanley, Walter, Louis, Earl or Winston?

Love Audrey, it'stop of my list if I can convince DH! DD is Elizabeth (Bess) so that obviously has my vote -also love Betty, Betsy, Eliza, Elsie and Lizzy as nicknames. Henrietta is fab although I'd go for Hettie day to day. Camilla is too Parker-Bowles for me I'm
afraid -how about Camille instead? Edwina likewise, too Currie! What about Harriet, Tabitha, Martha, Victoria, Eleanor?

emmyloo2 · 14/09/2012 09:31

Thanks bird!

Of your suggestions I love Walter and Victoria and Eleanor would also be on the list.

Elizabeth is definitely my all-time favourite girl's name and my DH's favourite so I suspect if it's a girl we may end up going with that. I love Bessie also love Betty and Lizzy.

My aunt Elizabeth was a Bunty!

My mum is a Hetty and her sisters were Margaret (Rita) Ena - not sure what short for, and Evelyn. Brothers Charles, George, Alan, Roy and Robert & kenneth.

My dad was a George his brother was John and sister Elizabeth. Other family names are Mary, James, Alison & Philomena.

amck5700 · 14/09/2012 09:43

oh and Joseph and Alexander

jaffacakehips · 14/09/2012 10:24

I like all your names apart from Edwina!
Sorry but it's IMO is a terrible name, it just sounds so hard to me. Also I know an Edwina and remember very clearly her asking her parents why they named her Edwina as she thought they could of pick a much prettier sounding name for her. But seriously it should only matter what your DH thinks.

What about:
Josephine nn Posy
Marina
Zara
Claudia

Timothy
Cosmo
Rupert
Lawrence
Toby
Rory
Henry

George & Quentin

George & Victoria

would both be lovely combinations! Classic but not overused these days.

sonniboo · 14/09/2012 12:18

I'd avoid George and John - sound a little similar imo.

But I love George & Hugo, George & Quentin, George & Ernest. Or how about Clement?

For girls I think George & Henrietta or George & Antonia sound lovely together.

Pasiphae · 14/09/2012 13:30

Congratulations!
I really like your list.

I especially like Albert and Arthur for the boys and Henrietta and Camilla for the girls.

More ideas: Edgar, Arnold, Hector, Nestor, Harold, Herbert, Benedict?
Thomasina, Hedwig, Antoinette, Simone, Octavia, Prunella?

Littlecherublegs · 14/09/2012 18:09

I like Hugo and Felix from your boys; and only Elizabeth from your girls.

How about:
Frank
Charles (Charlie)
Wilbur
Sidney
Bernard

Margaret
Enid
Hilda
Martha
Avery

LemonLovesLilac · 15/09/2012 22:46

Henrietta and Hugo would be my fave from you list really lovely!

TudorJess · 15/09/2012 23:39

Felix John for a boy

Victoria Henrietta for a girl

manicinsomniac · 16/09/2012 00:18

Albert - not overly keen but it's ok
Arthur - really don't like it. Do quite like Artie though (in a v posh way!)
Ernest - agree with your DH, don't like this at all
Hugo - don't like it, it has a gutteral sound to my ears
John - very much like it. Traditional, solid, classic
Felix - love it. One of my favourite boys names
Edward - Really like this and think it is perfect with George

Girls
Henrietta - Like it but it's very long for everyday and don't like Hettie
Elizabeth - It's ok. I'm always a bit meh about Elizabeth. Also don't like Lizzie, Betty, Betsy or Libby
Camilla - Like this. Only know two - one child and one adult.
Edwina - I actually hate this, sorry! so harsh and 'weeny' sounding
Audrey - really don't like this either

From your list I would choose Felix John and Henrietta Elizabeth I think.

Other old fashioned but slightly quirky:

Alistair, Abraham, Benedict, Cuthbert, Donald, Eustace, Edmund, Frederick, Gabriel, Hugh, Josiah, Jeremy, Leonard, Moses, Nathaniel, Patrick, Simeon, Theodore, Vincent, Walter, Zebediah

Anastasia, Arabella, Araminta, Bridget, Cecilia, Christina, Dorothea, Eleanora, Florence, Georgina, Harriet, Juliette, Jocelyn, Josephine, Louisa, Lydia, Liliana, Lucinda, Miranda, Miriam, Martha, Nora, Octavia, Penelope, Polly, Rosemary, Rosalind, Selena, Tabitha, Veronica, Verity

Thanks for everyone's feedback.

So far current front runners are Felix for a boy and Victoria for a girl.....

I like all your choices! I am also expecting DC2 and will be doing a massive baby name list! :) Congrats!

I think my favorites from your list are Hugo and Elizabeth. :)

emmyloo2 · 17/09/2012 05:03

Congrats CheerfulYank as well! The baby naming part is the best part in my view. I am dreading the newborn stage to be honest so I am trying to get excited about it by focusing on names.

I keep forgetting Hugo is on our list....I must remember to remind DH about it.

I also love Elizabeth. The concern I have about Victoria is I don't like the nicknames whereas I love the nicknames for Elizabeth...
