What do yout think about this girls name?

I really like Lilian for a girl - I think it sounds pretty, happy and serious at the same time - if that makes sense! I also like the shortening to Lily. But how does it sound to you? Is it too retro - i.e. old fashioined but not in a good way? I don't want to saddle DD with something that is generally considered frumpy and unpleasant sounding. Does anyone know any Lilians who aren't over the age of 60? Opinions very much appreciated.

I like it. :)
I know a (Welsh) Lilwen too.

I like it. I don't know of any young Lilians but it fits well with some of the names which have made a comeback recently. Lily as a stand-alone name is very nice too.

I link it is lovely - I wanted it but it it was vitoed by my husband. (Don't let that put you off, he viteoed loads of beautiful names!)

how does it fit with your surname and potential middle names?

facepaint · 07/09/2012 11:13

Thanks everyone.

Lizzie - Yes it goes well with our surname - haven't got to middle names yet! It's just one of those names I like without having to think about it IYSWIM! Just worried its a bit out there. What did you go with in the end?

I know a 15 year old Lilian. It's lovely. Hers is never shortened though.

MissKeithLemon · 07/09/2012 11:15

I don't know any Lillians these days but have in the past (older generations). I think it's very pretty yet still strong & traditional.

BunnyLebowski · 07/09/2012 11:17

Absolutely beautiful

Do it!

mrstowers · 07/09/2012 11:48

Lilian is lovely but not keen at all on the nn Lily as there are soooo many of them.

Badgerina · 07/09/2012 14:40

What mrstowers said.

imustbepatient · 07/09/2012 14:44

I think it is lovely, and you could use Lila (pr Lye-la) for a nn if there are a lot of Lilys in your area.

Sophisticatedknickers · 07/09/2012 14:54

Beautiful.

NervousAt20 · 07/09/2012 14:55

I like it Smile

lisaro · 07/09/2012 15:02

Love it. Smile

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 07/09/2012 15:07

Don't like either, sorry (Lilian too old-lady and Lily too ubiquitous), but I like the sound of Lilwen although I'm not sure how you say it.

MolatovBomb · 07/09/2012 15:59

It's gorgeous! I'm biased though - my Nanna was Lillian (b.1919).

TeaBrick · 07/09/2012 16:00

It's lovely, the only one I know is nearly 90 though, but don't let that put you off Smile

WithACherryOnTop · 07/09/2012 17:30

Love it.

MakeTeaNotWar · 07/09/2012 17:32

DD (aged 2) has Lillian as a middle name, love it
