I like the name Delphi but what is your initial reaction? Does it sound too unusual or pretentious?

I also like Tillie as a mn (not if we call DD2 Delphi though as I don't think it goes). Am not after opinions on that as I like it but wondering how would you spell it - with the 'ie' at the end or Tilly?

Thank you :)

I would think that it's a typo for Delphine (a lovely name IMO). Delphi on its own makes me think of the Pythia.

Xiaoxiong · 06/09/2012 12:29

Also, Tillie/Tilly is usually short for Matilda, isn't it?

Piecesof8 · 06/09/2012 12:29

Yeah Delphine is quite sweet, hadn't really thought of that.

The oracle connection doesn't put me off though. But I read somewhere it also means dolphin in Greek which I didn't like so much

Delphi makes me think of a nightclub we used to frequent in student days- the Adelphi! I don't think it sounds like a name, sorry. But Delphine is very pretty.

Tilly I would expect to be spelt with a 'y'.

Piecesof8 · 06/09/2012 12:31

I think Tillie is getting more popular as an actual name now, just not sure how to spell it but seeing as I've written 'ie' both times maybe I would just go for that

I love the name Delphine and could use nn Delphi which I like a lot. I personally much prefer it to Tillie.

How about Elfine (from Cold Comfort Farm)

Ebb · 06/09/2012 13:14

I immediately thought of Delphine donkey from Peppa pig which I am subjected to on a near daily basis at the moment. I think Delphie is pretty.

Delphine with Delphi as nickname would be OK.

Wouldn't use Tillie, too nicknamey but OK as nickname for Matilda. Would spell it Tilly.

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 06/09/2012 19:02

Delphi is one of our computer systems at work. To me, its like calling someone Microsoft.

Yika · 06/09/2012 19:42

I like Delphi. Y for Tilly.

squeak2392 · 06/09/2012 22:27

I think Delphine or Adelphi would be better, but I don't dislike Delphi.
I think Tillie looks silly and unfinished, so I would definitely spell it Tilly.
