You know it's a herb - yes?

Indali · 06/09/2012 14:58

Yes, it seems to be used in east european cooking a lot according to wiki Grin

I like the sound myself of Sorrel but I'm not English so just want to make sure it's not perceived to much as a sorrowful sounding name.

Sorrel Penelope or Penelope Sorrel.

Rowan is much nicer than Rowena.

Sorrel sounds a bit like soil and is the colour of a horse.

Flora is a good one

But Penelope is bleurgh

mathanxiety · 06/09/2012 15:44

Sorrel is the colour of a horse's coat - a chestnut brown. I think it sounds like sorrow too..

Rowena is nice.
Penelope is getting popular among celebrities.
Flora is nice though there is the margarine association.

I think I would choose between Rowena or Flora tbh.

ProudNeathGirl · 06/09/2012 15:51

Sorrel is green and leafy??? A bit like spinach.

MadBusLady · 06/09/2012 15:55

It's also a horse colour.

A nice one though!

redrubyshoes · 06/09/2012 15:58

Penelope is lovely.

The most unpleasent woman I have ever met was called Rowena - a true diva.

ExitPursuedByABear · 06/09/2012 16:11

Love Sorrel - but I once read a book about a blind pony called Sorrel Sad

I always do a slight snurk whenever Coriander is referred to on The Archers.

Flosie1989 · 06/09/2012 16:17

Sorrell is lovely! I know a very pretty little girl called Sorrell Smile its a herb isn't it?

airedailleurs · 06/09/2012 16:23

ooh Sorrell was the name I chose for my fantasy pony as a teenager, very pretty!

I also love Rowena (I am old enough to remember watching the Ivanhoe TV series in 1970)!

HiHowAreYou · 06/09/2012 18:15

I love Sorrel.
I remember people on a thread before saying it made them think of sorry, so I knew people would here too, but I think it's just beautiful.

wizzler · 06/09/2012 20:37

I know a Sorelle and both she and her name are lovely!
Don't like Penelope ..
I too prefer Rowan to Rowena

TittyWhistles · 07/09/2012 10:49

Thinking about it, I find Sorrow to be quite wonderfully melancholic and romantic as a child's name.

In a book though, maybe.

MrsJohnDeere · 07/09/2012 11:24

Rowena

redpanda13 · 07/09/2012 19:27

I like Sorrel. When I was about 11-12 I read a collection of ghost stories (maybe Penguin?) and the heroine in one of them was named Sorrel. I thought it was lovely then (early 80s) and I still do. It has stuck in my mind.

nappyaddict · 08/09/2012 00:36

I like flora, rowena and Penelope. What about petunia, pansy or primrose?

mathanxiety · 08/09/2012 06:21

How about Pernilla?
Lovely Swedish name..

BoyMeetsWorld · 13/09/2012 22:20

Sorrel! One of my all-time favourite girls' names though DH would veto it. Particularly suits little redheads, or maybe a blonde? The only Sorrel I know is a Sorrel Isolde and she's an incredibly beautiful 3 year old...

Pasiphae · 14/09/2012 13:16

Sorrel Penelope is a stunning name. It's a elegant but quirky.
I don't have the Sorrow link at all, the El makes all the difference for me.

mumofjust1 · 14/09/2012 13:20

Absolutely love Sorell, followed by Penelope

marge2 · 14/09/2012 13:22

Don't like Sorrel, Penelope (Keith!) Nah.

I like Flora.

itsjustmeanon · 14/09/2012 15:07

I love Flora, it was on my list, but crossed out by DH as he associated it with margarine.

LemonLovesLilac · 15/09/2012 22:21

Penelope really don't like the rest

PurplyWurply · 16/09/2012 00:59

Sorrel does sound like sorry! I think your daughter would end up meeting quite a few people who thought she was saying "Sorry" when she was introducing herself - they would then probably think that she was apologising for something or hadn't heard what they'd said.

If you decide to go for Sorrel, then please train your daughter to introduce herself by saying: "My name is Sorrel" as it will be less confusing than someone saying "I'm Sorrel" and everyone wondering why she's apologising.
