Sappho--I can't, can I?

I started a thread asking for some strong girls' names for dd the other day and got some great suggestions. I'm really drawn to names ending with o: Juno, Dido, Margo(t) etc, all of which have been vetoed by dh. Anyway the name Sappho popped into my head today and I love it, but it's just too ripe for playground abuse isn't it? Or by the time kids work out who Sappho was, would they be a bit older and beyond the name taunting stage?

Congratulations OP on your new baby! (and your decision not to call her Sappho!)

chipmonkey · 30/08/2012 00:19

It actually is a beautiful name. But no, you can't. In a nicer world you could but it isn't that nice a world.Sad

I personally give you permission to call your daughter Sappho as long as you swear to the goddess of Mumsnet that you will give her a brother called Hermaphroditos Grin

I met a woman called Lesbia once. I kid you not. She was Guatemalan.

And I met a woman called Swastika once. I can't remember what nationality she was - but she went by "Swassie" as a nick name.

No.

I do think Margaret is beautiful on tall women. You can nn her Margo and Dh can call her Maggie, Daisy, Peggy, etc.
I know an utterly gorgeous tall Margaret/Maggie.

I know a girl called Sappho. She's incredibly cool and it really suits her.

Saffron and shorten to Saffo? Then she can be Saffy etc if she likes when she gets older.

mirry2 · 30/08/2012 14:13

Saffron is nice

ChristineDaae · 01/09/2012 09:57

I honestly have never heard Sappho in my life? It kinda reminded me of Staffy dogs but that's about it. I do think Saffron is lovely though

Minty82 · 01/09/2012 19:44

IShall - intrigued as to why Margaret's only beautiful on tall women?! As the daughter of a 4'10" Margaret I felt the need to enquire... Wink May have just outed myself though...

And OP, no, you can't, sorry! Huge congratulations though!

I like a good strong name. Does it have to end in o?
Margot, Miriam, Meredith, Clio, Lois

Margaret is not a tall name in my head. Princess Margaret was 5' I think.

I'm not sure I have names filed into tall and small columns in my head actually! Confused

MyLastDuchess · 02/09/2012 08:17

I know a Sappho who is about 35ish. I'm not crazy about the name but it suits her (she is straight BTW!) and she has no big problems with it. If you really want to you should go for it.

Pacita · 02/09/2012 08:33

I love the name Sappho. And her poetry.
