for a girl? I am the only one never to have heard this name before?

Met a gorgeous baby Quinn today, and love the name. Firm contender if I have another girl. Is it Irish?

I have never heard or read the word quim either.... perhaps it is a regional thing. Here, I doubt kids would know the meaning either. Certainly the Quinn I know (aged 10) has never been teased about it.

Nospringflower · 16/08/2012 22:32

I'm Scottish and Quim-face was used as a playground insult Grin

SchrodingersMew · 16/08/2012 22:33

Btw, I don't think they would get teased, I have Quinn in my name and have never been teased for it.

Dude, NO.

BustleInYourHedgerow · 16/08/2012 22:54

Quinn O'Begorrah. Sound Paddywhackerish enough for me:)

lisaro · 16/08/2012 22:58

It's a surname. Awful mas a given name. And yes, the poor recipient would become known as Quim.
And numbertaker Quim Trim from an old Viz spoof advert. Grin

DOn't do it. Too much like quim and it's a character in Glee.

NorksAreMessy · 17/08/2012 06:22

It has been used as a shortened form of Harlequin as well Hmm

Makes me think of quim (Chaucer)

but mainly makes me sing
"come on without, come on within, you ain't seen nothing like the Mighty Quinn"

ChristineDaae · 17/08/2012 07:10

I know a 1yo girl called Quinn. I think it's lovely. Iv never heard/read quim till right now.

badtime · 17/08/2012 13:23

Daria's sister from the (eponymous) '90s cartoon was called Quinn.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/08/2012 15:06

I just wouldn't want to risk them being called Quim. I thought it was a well known term as well.

izzybizzybuzzybees · 17/08/2012 15:10

In the past 8 months I've heard of two babies being born called Quinn. Ones a boy the others a girl so I have no clue if its male or female. Never heard of quim and I an reluctant to google!

squoosh · 17/08/2012 15:34

Not a boy's name, not a girl's name. A surname. And a pretty common Irish surname at that too.

LoosingBattle · 17/08/2012 19:15

After a careful days research only 2 out of friends/family/work colleagues had heard the term Quim (worryingly one of them was my mother). However no one liked the name Quinn for a girl! So thats that!! Feel sorry for the little Quinn I met yesterday now!

quim is an old word for female genitalia I believe it comes from the Welsh cwm which means valley......

Puremince · 18/08/2012 16:47

I met a baby girl named Quinn, and though I said politely "What an unusual name" inside I was thinking "How could you do that to a child! It's too close to Quim!"

(Although, personally, I like quim as a name for vagina; it's got a sort of Victorian ambience to it)

anniewoo · 18/08/2012 16:49

Quinn is an irish surname
