I think I really like Barnaby!? Is that ridiculous?

I am a big fan of slightly old fashioned quirky names for boys. Ones that others hate. I started a thread here recently on how I loved Humphrey. I seem to have a thing for clunky old fashioned boys names.

Anyway I saw Barnaby mentioned on another thread and I wonder whether that could be a possibility for DS2.

To go with with George.

What do people think?

I love it. It's a beautiful name. Unfortunately DH hated it and vetoed it for DS.

CornishKK · 07/08/2012 07:41

Absolutely love it, it was on my list for DS, another DH veto!

IwishIwasinLondon · 07/08/2012 07:41

I know a Barrnaby, he's about 9. I think it's a great name - go for it!

VivaLeBeaver · 07/08/2012 07:49

I like it. Went to school with a barnaby, nm Barney.

BedHog · 07/08/2012 07:59

It seems very 'English' in a brown cord trouser way. I'd imagine a Barnaby would look a bit like Martin Clunes. I'd find an alternative nickname - Barney just says 'Purple dinosaur' to me!

duchesse · 07/08/2012 08:07

I think it's a lovely name! It would go with a Hubert I always imagine.

Badgerina · 07/08/2012 08:30

Like it. It's cute for a young child/baby, and Barney works well for a teenager/man. It has the right combination of sweet and serious.

WithACherryOnTop · 07/08/2012 13:01

Barnaby is awful, but it's certainly an improvement on Humphrey.

vamosbebe · 07/08/2012 13:08

Barnaby was on our list, too, but in the end we went for another not so common name which suits him very well - but my bloody hell is he a Barnaby!!!!!!!!!!!! Which we could change it, now Sad

WithACherryOnTop · 07/08/2012 13:12

That said I rather like Barnabas. It has a less 'cutesy' sound to it. But then you didn't ask about Barnabas,so I'm not sure why I'm waffling on about it.Blush

squoosh · 07/08/2012 13:19

I really like Barnaby, soooo much nicer than Humphrey.

minipie · 07/08/2012 13:39

Definitely better than Humphrey! I don't think of Barnaby as clunky, more a bit cutesy.

Suggestions (in case you wanted them Grin):

Gus (short for Fergus/Augustus), Bertram, Henry, Arthur, Miles, Frank, Fred, Robert.

BooBumpDaddyandMe · 07/08/2012 16:28

Aww I love Barnaby! We're having real problems agreeing on a name for our next boy (due in Nov). I started calling bump Barnaby as a bit of a joke but now I really like it! DH rolls his eyes in an "over my dead body" kind of way but he vetoed my only other choice (Brody) too! Definitely prefer Barnaby over Humphrey.

Stokey · 07/08/2012 17:52

I like Barnaby, good friend called Barney, also like Humphrey. What about Digby?

MoonHare · 07/08/2012 18:33

I like Barnaby too. And definitely prefer it to Humphrey.

Like you say Barnaby is unusual while not being completely out there. It might raise a few eyebrows I suppose, depends how much you care what others think. No. 1 on our boys names shortlist is currently Toby, which I think is in a similar vein to Barnaby.

minipie · 07/08/2012 18:39

Digby is awesome Stokey.

CaptainHetty · 07/08/2012 18:41

I love Barnaby :)

MammaTonic · 07/08/2012 18:43

My Grandad had a pedigree Chau Chau (dog) named Barnaby Rudge. Awesome name, IMO. I like Barnaby for a little boy but I'm not sure if it would suit a young man (17-40). Good on a baby/youngster/then old man.

Maybe not Rudge as his middle name though! Grin

Sounds fine to me. Unusual but not too 'out there'.

mrsbugsywugsy · 07/08/2012 18:50

I like it. Barnaby and George go well too.

CointreauVersial · 07/08/2012 18:51

I used to have a goldfish called Barnaby.

DS has a mate called Barney - quite a solid name.

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 07/08/2012 19:44

It's a wonderful name! I have a 5 year old Barnaby/Barney. No problems with his nn being Barney either.

axure · 07/08/2012 19:48

I like it- "Barnaby the bear's my name, never call me Jack or James, I will sing my way to fame...'

drcrab · 07/08/2012 19:59

I know a little boy called Barney! It's great!

WinkyWinkola · 07/08/2012 20:01

Great great name.
