Would this be setting the poor girl up for a lifetime of being called Nelly the Elephant?

I think Nell is quite cool. Nelly does make me think of the elephant....second thought would be the american rapper.

Nell is lovely, Nelly is not. It's comical. In a bad way. Penny is best.

What Badgerina said.

Nell is fab - Nelly is wet. We call 'Sunday drivers' nervous nellies.

I always thought Nelly was an abbreivation of Helen or Ellen.

Nelly does make me think of elephants.

I remember the song from my own childhood, and we recently bought a brand new CD of childrens songs to amuse DS with in the car - that had a version of Nellie the Elephant on it.

My dd2 is Eleanor known by friends and family as Nelly. As far as I know nobody has ever called her 'Nelly the elephant' however her boyfriend does occasionally call her Smellenor.

I have always loved the diminutive Nelly ever since i read The Warden and Barchester Towers.

If you met my Nelly you wouldn't find the name comical at all.

Penelope is lovely.Nell and Nelly are horrid.

Bunbaker · 02/08/2012 13:05

The usual abbreviation for Penelope is Penny. I have never come across Nelly for Penelope before.
