If you want a masculine French name, I agree with Gaston. Also Xavier, Bertrand, Gerard, Henri, Vincent.

Quite a few French boys' names can sound like girls' names to English ears but not these ones.

I meant masculine names and - 2nd question - boys names that scream "French" (like Giovanni in Italy, Igor/Vladimir in Russia...etc).

Funny that what seems to be typical French names are quite odd in France today.

Masculine names: I find hard sounding names more masculine, so eg Hector, Victor, Fred, Albert (rather than eg Milo or Leo which are softer). Perhaps also 70s names like Steve, Gary, Kevin?

Names that scream French: it has to be Pierre! Or Jean-Paul (or Jean-anything).

Arnaud, Augustin, Etienne, Luc, Maxime, Thibault, and yes, hyphenated names like Jean-Paul, Paul-Henri, Pierre-Louis...etc

My friend who is french and married to an Irish guy told me they couldn't agree over anything, they had a tough time One name she really loved, he had shook his head firmly no to it. Tell me! said expecting to hear some marvellous French name. Like Aurelian or Marcel or Arnaud or Francois. "Martin" she said. Well, she said it MarTANNNE. but still. Martin. funny how it sounded so glamorous to her. I said I agree with your dh it is the most banal name I can imagine. Sorry to anybody married to a Martin.

Masculine: Anything 'solid' sounding - Alexander, Marcus, Quentin, Vincent etc. (as opposed to the cutesy names Archie/Alfie/Artie etc.).
