We have 2 dd, both with middle names from my side of the family. Dc3 (gender unknown) due in a week. Dh wants to use middle name to reflect women in his family, specifically his nan. She is great and loves this idea ( he told her before me) but doesn't like her own name (Joan) but really wants her mums name... Lurlene.

How can I tell my Dh and his wonderful nana that this makes me think American stripper or extra in true blood...

I know its q middle name, but yikes. Or am I being silly does anyone like it?

Seriously LOLing at this thread!

MaitreKarlsson · 31/07/2012 22:22

Isn't Lurlene the rodeo girl turned business-woman in Brokeback Mountain? Jack Twist's wife? I thought she was quite cool actually

MaitreKarlsson · 31/07/2012 22:24

Oh, no apparently Lureen, sorry Blush

Devora · 31/07/2012 22:26

Oh dear. How about Lena? Or Lilian? Would Nan accept that?

You know what, though, Bainbridge is worse.

Don't panic - you'll find a solution Smile

WandaDoff · 31/07/2012 22:27

Could you just TELL Nan that you've used the name?

Just not put it on the birth certificate. Just a little white lie, to make an old lady happy. Wink

Sarcalogos · 31/07/2012 22:27

Talk them into Lena it's the only solution. (then tell all your friends its Elena... )

Sarcalogos · 31/07/2012 22:28

Bainbridge is better, sounds like a surname, people will 'get' that as a family tradition. and doesn't sound like a stripper

PenisVanLesbian · 31/07/2012 22:29

It's a middle name, it doesn't matter. No-one ever uses a middle name, I don't get the obsession with them on here. Just call her Lurlene and never mention in again.

Littlefish · 31/07/2012 22:31

Poor you. What a difficult position. I'm afraid that to me, it sounds like a nasty margarine type spread!

MollyMurphy · 31/07/2012 22:33

Oooh I would find a way out of Lurlene which, bless you, is one of the most unattractive names I have ever come across. Shorten it or...diid grans mum have a middle name?

I feel for you...you partner shouldn't have mentioned it to granny first Hmm

At the end of the day though I must admit with PenisVanLesbian (only on mumsnet...lol) that nobody ever uses a middle name.

wizzler · 31/07/2012 22:33

No. Just no

roteelefant · 31/07/2012 23:10

whispers I use my middle name all the time (as a mn) penis and molly

Lorelei is awful it's a rock or a woman who killed herself.

Lene is a name by it's self as well which is far nicer.

SchrodingersMew · 31/07/2012 23:16

Sorry but I immediately thought of the hillbilly sterotype when I read that name... Blush

BaronessBomburst · 31/07/2012 23:17

Lurlene?! I thought this was a joke thread when I saw the title.

How about asking Nana to chose the name, along the lines of 'you say you've always hated Joan - what did you want to be called?' and then use that. it can't possibly be worse

minipie · 01/08/2012 19:29

What about giving her Lurlene as a middle name but also giving her another middle name too? That way when DD is older she can quietly drop the Lurlene...

and you could always just not register the Lurlene part

ShowOfHands · 01/08/2012 19:45

We had to use a family name when we had ds. So we also gave another middle name and sandwiched the not to our taste name in the middle. I much prefer it that way.

charitygirl · 01/08/2012 19:51

It's hideous but I don't think that's a problem for a middle name. She'll probably think it's pretty when she's a little girl, and a funny story when she's older. A bizarre middle name is an asset!

Panzee · 01/08/2012 19:55

Oh Lorelei I like that name. Not helpful to you OP, sorry! :)
