What names have the most beautiful/inspiring meanings in your opinion?

I was going through a baby names book the other day with an aunt who is ready to drop any day now (3 days late ouch) and was just wondering what everyone's opinions on this were.

:)

I like the virtue names:

Faith
Hope
Mercy

Two names that we're thinking of for middle names for DS2 in September are Felix: Happy, lucky, fortunate; and Ambrose: immortal.

My dd is Maeve and I love the meaning. She who intoxicates! Or the Irish queen of the fairies, or mythical warrior queen. Suits her!

My name means crowned Wink

Trazzletoes · 01/08/2012 14:29

I have a friend whose daughter's name (in his mother tongue) means: gasps in amazement/wonder. I think that's really beautiful!

LordOfThe5Rings · 01/08/2012 14:31

Aw that is beautiful. What is the name? :)

Trazzletoes · 01/08/2012 15:04

Tbh not sure of spelling! Possibly Shamai, as in Sher-my (not Sher-meee!)

Viviennemary · 01/08/2012 15:58

Somebody called Heather told me her name meant Maid of the Mountains. I thought that was quite nice!

Polkadotfanatic · 01/08/2012 22:14

I love Hebrew names for boys and Greek names for girls (for some reason)

Reuben: Behold! A son
Seth: Annointed
Matthew : as someone has already posted

Phoebe: Light / yellow
Thea: Goddess
Zoe: Life

lovely meanings. I also adore the name Beatrix: Bringer of joy! :)

Greenwing · 02/08/2012 11:58

I think meanings are really important.

Theodore/Dorothea/Dorothy and Jonathan both mean 'gift of God' in Greek and Hebrew respectively.
Benedict which means 'blessed' is beautiful.

Grace - my favourite perhaps
Gemma - a precious gem/jewel.
Hilary - cheerful, merry

I'm 33w with a little girl - our DC#1 - and we plan to call her Lucy Gabrielle when she arrives.

Like many others, we've had a bumpy ride this far with a MC at 14w and then losing a twin at 7w into this pregancy - we've chosen the name Lucy as it means light, which seems fitting after some of the darker moments, and Gabrielle (pronounced Gabriel) is my 92 year old GM's name and means God's promised one.

rainnie · 03/08/2012 23:01

I love the 16th centary names. My 2nd DD is Verity that means honesty, she loves her name, unusual but not too out there.

LordOfThe5Rings · 03/08/2012 23:32

I am so sorry to hear about your mc and loss of twin, beans.

Lucy is a beautiful name and I am sure it will be fitting of your bringer of light :)

Jennyrosity · 03/08/2012 23:54

Put my daughter's first name and middle name together and they translate as "life rebel", which suits her personality very well!
