Expecting DS5 in a few weeks. Thought name was chosen and sorted but just recently i've 'noticed' the name Gideon. Firstly on the closing credits of a tv programme i was watching and then today in a newspaper article. It's caught my attention and im really starting to like it. What are the thoughts? Should mention that i like quirky and different names too, without them being too weird or 'made-up' IYKWIM.

Yeah, til i read it in paper yesterday i had no idea his real name was Gideon either!! Im pretty sure majority of people are the same. We'd considered Quentin and/or Quin before but DH not at all keen on those names. The more im looking at Gideon on this thread the more im liking it as potential name Smile

Reminds me of the Gideons bibles they hand out to everybody at high school to take home

tammy234 · 29/07/2012 21:13

I had no idea about the Osbourne connection and doubt many others do, so would not worry about that.

Gideon sounds like a nice, solid, classic name. Only problem imo is the nickname Giddy - not that nice imo. But I love the suggestion of Quentin (Quinn or Quenny) especially for your fifth son (as derived from Quintus, latin for fifth!).

scottishmummy · 29/07/2012 21:22

i like gideon

poppy283 · 29/07/2012 21:57

Sorry, awful. Bibles and George Osbourne:(

poppydaisy · 29/07/2012 21:59

I like Gideon, mainly because I know a lovely one Smile.

No one will make the Osbourne connection and even if they do, there are worse connections in the world!

Gugglebum · 30/07/2012 03:45

I love it. It is on my list, in fact.

tammytoby · 30/07/2012 15:14

I like Gideon but have never met a real life one. So he probably won't have to add an initial or other adjective to be identified. Nice choice imo.

Leftwingharpie · 31/07/2012 06:59

Bear in mind that while people might not actually know, if they read it in the paper, or hear it on the telly, they might then be prompted to think oh like 4boyzmum's George and Gideon!

4boyzmum · 31/07/2012 13:08

Yeah, i hear what you're saying that people might think that if they ever did read it etc etc. But tbh that's not an association that particularly bothers me. I understand from other posts on this thread that some folk have a real and strong opinion of George Osbourne and whilst i am in no way ignorant of politics, nor am i so passionate about it that having a son that shares a name of a chancellor or any politician at all would influence my decision or make me recoil in horror! As poppydaisy states, i feel there are worse things to be associated with IMO. Plus it's just another version of people saying 'Oh, I don't like the name '???????', I went to school with someone called that and he was a right twat!'

My lovely brother's name. Sure it's unusual, that's a good thing. It's abbreviated to Gid, never Giddy. And lots of names remind us of someone we don't like, soon goes. Go for it!

AlpinePony · 31/07/2012 13:50

I can't imagine there's one single person on the planet who know's George Osbourne's birth name yet is 100% ignorant of basic Judeo-Christian teachings! Hmm

If we're to rule out names due to MP's (650+ + middle names) and dubious celebrities, what would we be left with? Oh, step forward Ms Paltrow!

Leftwingharpie · 31/07/2012 14:02

Two sons. You would have two sons who share their name with the chancellor. By all means don't let it put you off.

Alpinepony what do you mean?

Catsmamma · 31/07/2012 14:04

I love it, wanted it for both boys, but dh was having none of it. Not even when I cried.

bastard

happymumof3 · 31/07/2012 14:05

DS2 is Gideon, its a fab name and noone has ever mentioned it in connection to George Osborne. His best friend calls him Giddy or Gid but nobody else.

4boyzmum · 31/07/2012 21:29

Whatever anyones opinion is of him....he does have a nice name....both of them IMO. Plus, never had a clue who GO was when named my son George...couldnt give a monkeys either! Yeah, maybe we should all name our kids after various foodstuffs alpinepony. Ive not yet met a Carrot thats pissed me/anyone off!! Grin

I think Gideon is a good solid name. What's not too like?

(why are people worried about Osbourne, what about David (Cameron), Nick (Clegg) etc)?! Anyway, these politicians probably won't be around as your ds grows up.

evamummy · 31/07/2012 21:59

sorry, to (not too)

patosullivan · 31/07/2012 23:12

And why would anyone think that a baby named George or Gideon was named after George Osbourne anyway?

Fifi2406 · 31/07/2012 23:38

I taught a little boy called Gideon he was a lovely boy so I always associate the name with him and love it!!!!

evamummy · 01/08/2012 07:35

That is the problem with asking about a name in isolation - but as soon as we meet a lovely real life Gideon or any other name we associate it with him.

Queenofsiburbia · 01/08/2012 07:46

Sorry but I do think of bibles :)

NeedlesCuties · 01/08/2012 12:11

I really liked it, and the story of Gideon in the Bible (is in the Old Testament book of Judges) is a good strong story.

One thing that put me off using it, was that it doesn't really flow with our surname, and I had images of kids in the school playground changing it to "giddy up Gideon." Confused I could be being unreasonable about the last point though...

weaselm4 · 01/08/2012 12:27

I like it (both of my DC have biblical names).

My first thought was Gideon Coe from 6music.

And I had no idea about George Osbourne either.

CappuccinoCarrie · 01/08/2012 13:51

I know a child Gideon and an adult one, its a great name and as someone else said unusual enough to be a bit quirky, but everyone will know how to spell and pronounce it. The young Gideon was 'Giddy' as a small child which was really cute, but it generally 'Gids' now. Do it!
