Who is planning on having 2 or 3 names 'ready' and will pick when baby comes?

Just that really, have various names and can't decide.

Weirdly, middle names are sorted but first name not. Concerned that after the birth I'll be too indecisive and/or emotional and will pick wrong one. However waiting until I see her does seem 'right'.

If she turns out to be a he, I'm really stuck!

Do a list for both just to be sure!

We are short listing names for both sexes. We plan on finding out the sex at the earliest opportunity but will agree on a short list of names for both sexes no matter what :-)

Well Shimmy, sonographer x 2 have said the immortal line 'I think its a girl but can't say 100% sure' so don't know whether to believe or not though have been unable to stop the pink explosion! Am 30 weeks, so have a lot too!

We had both dd's and ds's name agreed on the day after our 20 week scan!

"However waiting until I see her does seem 'right'."

But does a new born really LOOK like any name? I don't think so. Imo you might as well choose a name you love for your little boy now - there is no difference whether he is in your tummy our outside imo.

rachel234 · 26/07/2012 10:28

sorry, meant girl

pinkgirlythoughts · 26/07/2012 12:30

Well, we had a yellow bump, so had two lists of names. For girls, I took a list of about fifteen different combinations of names that I just couldn't pick between, I loved them all so much, so it was quite lucky we had a boy really!

We 'took' three names with us for a boy, Zachary Frederick, Arthur Frederick, and James Frederick. When DS was born, the only thing DP and I instantly agreed on was that he didn't 'look' like any of those names! After about five hours of discussion, we bumped Frederick up to first name slot and chose a completely different middle name. He's 14 months now, and I do still occasionally wonder if I picked the right name, but most of the time I absolutely love the combination we picked!

We're struggling to agree on one name let alone a list full, hubby always seems to come up with -ie names but I'm a dog groomer and I know hundreds of dogs with those names, Charlie, Alfie, Milly, Molly, Bonnie etc

Bartusmaeus · 26/07/2012 13:46

We had a list of about 10 names after the 20 weeks scan ("it's a boy!") which we whittled it down bit by bit to 2. We both liked the 2 names but each preferred a different one!

We decided to wait until he was born but towards the end I was secretly leaning towards DH's fave name ("X") and during the labour I decided (secretly) to definitely call DS "X". I waited until he was out then looked at DH and said let's call him "X" Grin

10 months on and I don't regret it, it's perfect for DS.

ThePhantomDeregisterer · 26/07/2012 14:10

We had 3 for ds1 and yes babies can look like names! Two of them suited him, one of them made us both laugh as soon as we tried it on him!

For ds2 we just had the one name. I think because it's common it would suit him whatever.

DC2 is due August 15 and we have chosen not to find out the sex before, so will be going to the hospital with our shortlist of 2 names for both sex (and 2 more in my head that DH is not too fussed about - taking advantage of his emotional stage :o ). I will decide on the first name and DH will pick the first mn.

It worked for DS1, so let's hope it will too this time!

HowILiveNow · 26/07/2012 14:39

I had a shortlist of three for DS - one suited him, and still does (age 2) and two didn't, and still really really don't!

Am now pregnant with DC2 and planning on doing the same thing again.

strawberrypenguin · 26/07/2012 14:44

We did exactly what you describe in your OP, had middle names sorted and 3 names to choose from. Worked perfectly, we immediately discounted one and took a day to decide between the others but we absolutely picked the right name and we've never thought otherwise.

catus · 26/07/2012 14:50

We had it down to 2 before the birth, one I favoured slightly, one my DH favoured slightly. We couldn't decide.
After seeing me go through the ordeal that is labour and birth, DH came to the conclusion that my favoured name was absolutely perfect, and it was decided there and then, maybe 20 mins after delivery.

Panzee · 26/07/2012 14:52

I knew I was having a boy and had 3 names with one favourite. We went for the favourite. :)

Texmex · 26/07/2012 15:30

We didn't know the sex of DD, so had middle names sorted but two possible first names for each. When she arrived we chose her name quite easily out of the two actually, I thought it would be more difficult. We're planning on doing the same for DC2 who is due any day. Good luck!

babyblabber · 26/07/2012 15:37

We had a name picked for each sex (didn't find out what we were having) but had 2/3 back up names. When DS was born DH said he didn't look like our chosen name which was exactly what I was thinking so thank god we had other names to consider. We chose one there and then, otherwise it could have taken weeks! DD suited her name so the girl name back ups will be kept for no.3!

SilentMammoth · 26/07/2012 19:59

Each to their own, but think both names have been waaaay overused!

Chunkychicken · 27/07/2012 10:24

We didn't find out the sex with DD and although I suppose we had 'shortlist' of names, we didn't have any particular favourites or any consensus between us. However, it was very, very easy to name her. DH asked me, I suggested the first name that came to mind and he agreed. We may have been hormonal & emotional, but I love her name & it suits her. I'm finding it MUCH harder to come up with a list of names for #2 though, as I want to like one as much as DD's name & for it to sound right with her name too...

gladders · 27/07/2012 10:47

do not understand how people can name a baby before the birth - one friend did this for her dd and we were all referring to the baby as Abi before she was born - felt odd to me...

ds was named from a list of about 15 names thaht we liked - dd we took our time and named her when she was about a week old with a name we hadn't previously considered.

no rush - think it's nice to take your time and get a name you're both happy with.

pixiestix · 28/07/2012 13:24

I had two names for a girl and one for a boy. When DD was born I let DH choose (as he had let me make up the shortlist) and he went for the one that was not my favourite. I was a bit sad not to use my Number 1 name but now I couldn't imagine DD as anything else - she has grown into her name beautifully.
