Is Ezekiel just too strange?

My DP likes the name Ezekiel, I'm not against it in terms of how it sounds but I'm not sure about the connotations behind the name.

Has any one met/known a person called Ezekiel?

It's my dentist's surname. Never heard it as a first name.

Sorry that's probably not much help! Didn't want you to go unanswered.

scottishmummy · 22/07/2012 20:26

sounds madeuppicus media types forename

Ham69 · 22/07/2012 20:26

I know a 2 year old Ezekiel who's very sweet. I did here a little girl mispronouncing his name and calling him 'icicle' but I thought that was sweet! I quite like the name.

Napdamnyou · 22/07/2012 20:27

The prophet Ezekiel was quite strange! Apocalyptic visions....

I would be wary for that reason alone. I think nn Zeke will probably date fast. And Eke sounds like 'eeeek!'

Is there any particular reason you are drawn to the name?

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 22/07/2012 20:27

In Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Ezekiel is acknowledged as a Hebrew prophet. In Judaism and Christianity, he is also viewed as the author of the Book of Ezekiel that reveals prophecies regarding the destruction of Jerusalem and the Millennia Temple visions, or the Third Temple.

Any help? Grin

I know one and he's lovely. I also know a zeke who is also lovely.

honeytea · 22/07/2012 20:31

It's really just because my DP picked it out and it's the only non Swedish name he likes (he is Swedish not a Swedophile.)

I havn't looked into what Ezekiel actually spoke about in the bible, neither of us are very religious. If we were to take the name further we would need to look into it and make sure he didn't say horrid things about gay people being bad or women being less than men.

I'm not a massive fan of Zeke as a nn, I think I'm talking myself out of the name.

I like it! Maybe a little too out there for me (as I live in quite a boring area of a small country), but I do love Old Testament names and have used Biblical names for each of my DC :)

SucksToBeMe · 22/07/2012 20:32

My Argentine nephew is called Ezekiel. It is a popular name over there. Its a lovely name.

DidntChaKnow · 22/07/2012 20:33

I know and 8 year old Ezekiel but he has always been known as Zeke, I like it! It's unusual but not really out there IMO

is it a biblical name? That was my first thought upon hearing it but no negative connotations.

Napdamnyou · 22/07/2012 20:38

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Ezekiel

A minor prophet from the time the Israelites were exiled in Babylon, his visions were about the destruction and rebirth of the temple and the people of Israel. Lots of veery strange and hard to understand visions, almost hallucinogenic in how they come across (so there has been interest in the prophecies from stoners and conspiracy types who think he is writing about aliens visiting earth...

MirandaGoshawk · 22/07/2012 20:41

I like it.

But then I love many Biblical names. (But not all. Abishag, anyone?)

rookiemater · 22/07/2012 20:48

Yes

WopBopALooBop · 22/07/2012 20:52

I like it! Don't think Zeke is any weirder than Zach was before it came really popular this time round really.

There was a boy in Neighbours called Zeke about 10 years ago! But that's the only one I've heard of personally. Oh, and the Ezekiel mentioned in the song Cell Block Tango from Chicago.

WopBopALooBop · 22/07/2012 20:53

P.s. heard someone shouting 'Abednego!!!!' at their child in Tescos recently... That might be even more out there, as far as biblical names go!

MirandaGoshawk · 22/07/2012 20:55

Wop - that's brilliant!

moogalicious · 22/07/2012 20:58

I know one, again Zeke for short. I don't think it will date - the nn has been around for ages. The Zeke I know is in his 20's.

honeytea · 22/07/2012 20:58

wop I hadn't actually considered that I have nephew called zach, so zach and zeke could be a bit much.

I feel so mean because my DP is so happy with himself for finding a name that he loves. It is super rare in Sweden only 22 people have it as a 1st name, I think DS might have to spend the rest of his life spelling his name.

I think I will keep it on the list for now and try and push other options..

Any one for Frej? He's a norse god, Freja's brother.

Maybe I should just choose a nice normal name like joe!

This is a well known game and makes Tesco Shopping a lot more fun. Choose most ridiculous name ever, scream ridiculous name at DC as you wander around Tesco's. Await amusing Confused Shock Hmm from other shoppers.

3boysgirlontheway · 22/07/2012 23:15

DD would have been called Ezekiel if she had been a boy. I love it!

overthehill · 22/07/2012 23:17

I beg to differ with Napdamnyou: there's some great bits in Ezekiel such as the valley of dry bones (dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones etc), making a heart of stone into a heart of flesh, the river of life - a lot of it is very poetic. I think it's a good name - but how about one of the other prophets such as Elijah (who healed people and went up to heaven in a fiery chariot) or Elisha??
