Lilia or Claudia?

We have a 2 week old baby girl who is still nameless. We had decided on Claudia but the "Claw" part is now turning me off. I was against Lilia because all those names are so popular but it's growing on me. I'm here asking for your kind advice, which one do you prefer?

They are both lovely names but I much prefer Claudia. It's not too popular (although popular names are just that because the name is nice). My friends niece is called Claudia and I just wish I thought of it for mine! Congrats on your new arrival!

Claudia.

The very fact that Lilia/Liliya sounds like so many other popular names - Lily, Lilian, Layla, Leila, etc. - is a very good reason not to use it. It's an awkward choice - not unusual like, say, Azalea but not commonplace like it's sound-a-like Lily. As it is quite uncommon you may find yourself saying, 'No, not Lilian - Lilia!' more often than not. Personally, I'd find that quite tiresome. Either go with something more unusual or pick the common variety of the name - it'll save headaches in the future.

For what it's worth, I think Claudia is an excellent choice for your little girl and you could pronounce it more like KLOW-dee-uh if you didn't like the sound of the first syllable.

Stellan · 16/07/2012 09:53

As you like the 'ia' ending, you may wish to add Victoria, Amelia, Julia, Lydia, Sophia and Olivia to your list of contenders. If they are too commonplace, you could think about Alicia, Antonia, Aria, Aurelia, Cecilia, Cordelia, Dahlia, Eugenia, Eulalia, Fabia, Felicia, Gloria, Honoria, Hermia, Natalia, Octavia, Olympia, Ophelia, Sylvia, Virginia Zinnia, and Zenobia to your list.

But, really, Claudia is an excellent choice and I'm sure you'll find plenty of people who like Lilia too.

Claudia, no question.

SweetPea3 · 16/07/2012 10:28

Claudia. You could always pronounce it the Germsn way instead?

sammyleh · 16/07/2012 10:42

Claudia is a gorgeous name :) We're having second thoughts because each of the names (first, middle and last) we've chosen all end in N but then we thought 'so what?!' I doubt people will go round calling your little girl Claw anyway, and if they do, then tell them otherwise xx

juneau · 16/07/2012 10:45

Claudia. And sure, you could pronounce it Cloud-ia, but you live in the UK (I assume), so everyone is going to say Claw-dia anyway. But I like it Smile

PepperOnMyPaprikash · 16/07/2012 11:11

Claudia is lovely, much nicer that Lilia.

Congratulations!

LuellaLovesLavender · 16/07/2012 11:13

Claudia is beautiful.......and I would never have got the Claw thing from it!

PerryCombover · 16/07/2012 11:14

Both lovely

bigbluebump · 16/07/2012 12:25

The meaning of Claudia (lame/disabled), derived from the Latin claudus, would put me off, sadly.

Lilia is lovely!

TheGrandOldDuke · 16/07/2012 12:36

I adore the name Claudia. The 'lame' in Latin wouldn't bother me...It was one of our top 3. Have always loved it. Like 'Clauds' as a nickname. Or 'dia'.

catus · 16/07/2012 12:40

Claudia. Definitely. A lovely name.
Lilia, not so much to be honest. Too delicate.

kerala · 16/07/2012 12:49

Definitely Claudia. There are legions of Lilys its totally overdone and Lilia will become Lily to her friends I would think. Love Claudia cool and adult.

chaya5738 · 16/07/2012 13:48

I would go with Claudia as Lilia (or versions of it way too popular).

You could call her Claude. Or Claudie. I don't even notice the "Claw" sound you are worried about.

HowCanADoorBeAJar · 16/07/2012 20:28

Thanks!. We had almost 100 hundred percent decided on Claudia but when I saw her, I changed my mind. She doesn't seem to look like a particular name. My mum thinks I'm ridiculous and said babies don't look like names, they look like babies. I think it's the hormones. Grin Will take your thoughts away and have another chat with DH.

BillyBollyBandy · 16/07/2012 20:35

I have a Claudia, nn Claudie or Coco.

Sara13 · 16/07/2012 20:45

I too have a Claudia and we call her Claudie as a nickname, always get lots of comments on her name .... Have you decided

VolAuVent · 16/07/2012 21:59

Lilia, definitely! It's a really pretty and flowing sound.

I find Claudia a bit harsh.
