It's such a beautiful, underused name which both sounds and looks lovely in my opinion Smile however there is one problem.....are you willing and Abel jokes etc. what do you think???? I really love it but just want to get a feel for what the general public think........Tanx in advance.

It is strange that most other popular names from 18th & 19th centuries have come be into fashion except this one. May be the potential for willing and Abel jokes is putting people off.

MammaTonic · 15/07/2012 19:24

It's a Bblical name, isn't it? I'm not especially keen; I think there are far nicer Hebrew boys names, such as Gabriel, Ezra, Abraham, Samuel.

Perhaps the 'are you able, Abel?' thing is off-putting. And, the name has quite strong associations to te Bible story 'Cain and Abel' - maybe that puts some off (i.e. The very religious connection)?

CecilyP I have been wondering the same and also considering biblical names are so popular....I think it must the the willing and Abel jokes. I think it is a little gem though! Grin

No.

BumgrapesofWrath · 15/07/2012 19:32

Love it!

youonlysingwhenyourewinning · 15/07/2012 19:44

No. Way to much joking potential ...

VolAuVent · 15/07/2012 19:59

I like it.

RillaBlythe · 15/07/2012 20:05

My mum's middle name, my dad calls her it sometimes. Cute as a nickname in an odd way.

CakeBump · 15/07/2012 20:05

The bible story would put me off - he was murdered by his brother in a jealous rage...

TheTeardropExplodes · 15/07/2012 20:10

I like it.

Shinyshoes1 · 15/07/2012 20:15

love it !

MrsTrellisOfSouthWales · 15/07/2012 20:32

You'd have to give him a teddy bear or brother called Cole Smile

ThePigOnTheWall · 15/07/2012 20:35

Did Cain kill Abel or did Abel kill Cain?

Either way, that's not a positive thing to spring to mind is it?

OneLieIn · 15/07/2012 20:37

And willing and reporting for action

Or Cain

There are some good rhymes also

Youremindmeofthebabe · 15/07/2012 20:38

I had Abraham on my list (Abe)- it's almost Abel! I rather like it. But then, I do have an Eli, which isn't to everyones taste.

Fenouille · 15/07/2012 20:57

I love the name, and the only Abel I've met in rl was very cool, so it's a yes from me!

DottieRose · 15/07/2012 21:41

Youremindmeofthebabe I was also considering Abraham but the hubby said no way.....I also have an Eli! We obviously have great taste Wink

Ditto fenouille

DottieRose · 15/07/2012 21:58

Yeeeaaaaah glad I'm getting some positive reactions to the name, I can show the dh later! As for the Abel and Cole veg boxes I'm in Ireland and as far as I know they don't exist here! And the Cain and Abel story is not an issue for me as Abel was the good brother!

Stunning name!

Tigertots · 16/07/2012 18:13

I don't like it nearly as much as Jacob.

defineme · 16/07/2012 18:19

Are you a Sons of Anarchy tv series fan? Baby boy in that is called Abel.

SLVC · 16/07/2012 23:36

I love it, was on my lists.. Has a lovely sound to it, and as others have said, Abe is a cool nn. Plus has the known, but not popular factor if that bothers you..

BackforGood · 16/07/2012 23:56

The fact it sounds like 'able' is what puts me off, tbh. I think you'd get tired of people trying to make feeble jokes if it were your name.

Mind, I've heard worse...... much worse Grin
