Tobias but not Toby!

I love the name Tobias but hate Toby (weird I know) if I named my ds Tobias I would never ever want it shortened, do you think I will have a battle on my hands or do you think people are accepting of your choice as a parent??? I am no shrinking violet and would not have any problem being rude to someone's face correcting them, as I think once you correct someone once they would hardly persist with shortening it!

You only get a say on this for the first 2-4 years anyway. His contemporaries will not have any respect for your views and they will certainly call him Toby. He may prefer Toby too. If you can't leave the shortening choice up to him and his friends then go with a different name.

Battle. Not so much at primary, but at secondary- ds has friend called tobias and only refers to him as Toby- mum prefers tobias, but she's not at school with him!

I know a 9 year old Tobias who's only ever used the whole thing. As Heads said though, it will be his choice.

dontcallmehon · 13/07/2012 23:01

If you really don't like Toby, it is best to avoid Tobias, as he will inevitably be called Toby at some point.

BackforGood · 13/07/2012 23:03

I agree with others - it will get shortened once he's at school, regardless of if you like it or not. If you really don't like the shortened name, then choose a different long name would be my advice.

I hate the name Toby (my all time most disliked boys' name TBH) but quite like Tobias. I think you'd have a job keeping all and sundry from shortening it.

SkiBumMum · 13/07/2012 23:05

Don't do it. I don't really like the shortened version of DD1's name. TBH I didn't think people would shorten as a v different name but they do and it bugs me - a lot. It bugs her too and she's only 3.5!

GnabGib · 13/07/2012 23:08

I know an adult Tobias and he's never been called Toby- every time someone tried at primary or secondary school, he made it very clear his name was Tobias, not Toby. People may try, but it'll be his choice.

I think if you hate the nn, then don't use it.

I know lots of people who have been given long names and are called by their full names only. I know equally as many who have been given a long name with strict instructions that the name is to never be shortened, only to be known as the nn.

If you truly hate it, then don't risk it.

I much prefer Toby to Tobias fwiw

VolAuVent · 14/07/2012 00:59

Agree Tobias is much nicer than Toby.

Do you like other names ending in -ias? How about Elias (Eli) or Matthias (Matt)?
