Stanley, Wyatt, Angus or Brodie?

birdofthenorth · 05/07/2012 15:02

Not even pg but will ttc this month after 2 recent mcs so thought obsessing about baby names already might help me feel more positive!

If we had a girl she would be Sadie, Emmeline, Lois, Violet (dh less convinced) or Jude (Judith on bc).

I have always found boys names so much harder! Current contenders are Stanley, Wyatt (family name, albeit an odd one), Angus, Brodie. Also quite like Travis, Auden, Ross, Fred(-erick) and Frank.

It seems I tend to like boys names which are

-Surnamey
-Scottish
-or old fashioned (1900- 1930, say)

So, are all of these awful, and if so, can you suggest better ones along similar lines?!

Hiya, I don't think any are awful, but you seem to have a split between boys names you like: Stanley, Angus, Frank and Auden are traditional, whereas Wyatt, Brodie and Travis sound like Surfers. Nowt wrong with that at all, itd just something I've noticed!!

From your traditional list, I like Auden as I'm a huge fan of the poet W. H. Auden. Plus, Auden has a beautiful tone to it, like Aubrey or Reuben.

I prefer the full Francis to Frank.

From your 'surfer' list, I like Brodie. I think Brodie would be cool and very good-looking when her grows up!

Auden/Aubrey/Reuben are my faves, though.

And, very best of luck to you for TTC. I hope that you conceive very soon! xx

Sadie is lovely.Emmeline too. Lois is nice.Violet is very nice. I hate Jude but Judith is nice.

Stanley is horrid.I don't like Wyatt.Love, love Angus. Hate Brodie. Travis is ok. Auden is great. Ross is nice. Don't like Frederick.Frank is ugly, harsh and shouldn't be inflicted upon a lovely newborn.

MammaTonic · 05/07/2012 15:24

Forgot to comment on girls names!

Sadie is nice, so is Sasha, Sienna, Selena. Emmeline could also be Evangeline, Emma, Ella, Eliana, Elena (El-ay-na), Lene (Lay-na).

I'm not keen on Lois but love Luisa.

Violet is gorgeous.

Sorry, I don't like Judith. I prefer Julia, Juliana, Juliette or Julietta (NN Etta).

x

peggyblackett · 05/07/2012 15:25

Love Angus. Innes as a possibility? Not hugely keen on the others though (sorry)

reikizen · 05/07/2012 15:28

the worst selection of names I have heard in ages! Sorry, but you did ask.

birdofthenorth · 05/07/2012 15:39

Ha, I had a feeling they might not be popular choices, don't know why I am drawn to names others think are vile!

Surprised Angus and Auden are coming off relatively well.

MammaTonic -yes indeed -DH rather more crudely teases that my name suggestions are either crusty or chav! (He is kidding on the last bit before anyone takes offense -and he seems to like a lot of my "chav" suggestions, too!). Thanks for the best wishes -fingers crossed Smile

Well I quite like Wyatt, it's very wild west/cowboy-ish but that's ok!

Brodie - I know it's a Scottish surname but to me it sounds a bit American surfer. Cowboys good - surfers bad Wink

VolAuVent · 05/07/2012 16:43

Emmeline Violet for a girl.

Frederick Auden for a boy.

EdithWeston · 05/07/2012 16:55

Sadie - lovely
Emmeline - not one I like, but nothing wrong with it
Lois - don't really like
Violet - lovely
Jude (Judith on bc) - lovely

Stanley - ok
Wyatt - middle name?
Angus - lovely
Brodie - bit too surnamey
Travis - ok-ish
Auden - don't take to
Ross - don't like
Fred(-erick) - lovely
Frank - like

Littlecherublegs · 05/07/2012 17:11

Stanley seems to be getting quite popular (know of 2 born in the last month!) - also know a dog named Stanley too!
Dont like Wyatt, Angus or Brodie, sorry.
Travis is ok as is Fred and Frank though I wouldnt chose them myself.

You seem to have quite a mix range of names here - you say you like surnamey names which are generally more modern for first names, though you like old fashioned names too and then Scottish ones?!

So, off the top of my head, other suggestions are:

Surnamey-
Jackson
Wilson
Cooper
Riley
Tyler
Jamieson

Scottish-
Fergus
Alistair
Gregor
Douglas
Stewart
Logan

Old fashioned (1900-1930s)-
Albert
Ernest
George
Theodore
Clifford
Lester

amck5700 · 05/07/2012 20:18

Blair
Montgomery (Monty)
Magnus
Struan
Nairn
Murray (Moray)
Logan
Rowan

birdofthenorth · 05/07/2012 21:25

I do like Logan -surnamey, Scottish & old fashioned!

Thanks for all tour suggestions, some really nice ones, & some which don't really do it for me but it's helping me understand what school of name I'd really like

Harris? Kyle ?

blonderthanred · 06/07/2012 00:06

Oh I love your taste! I am also a fan of the surnamey and old-fashioned (and Scottish, although DH is Irish). Love Logan and Travis and love Auden, beautiful. Brodie I think of as a girls' name now although I guess it is unisex. I love Jude too for either sex.

Sorry I have nothing to add but I do think you've got some great names there.

jaggythistle · 06/07/2012 00:10

like Angus, Brodie, Ross, Travis, not in any particular order.

like Lois best, if my dc2 had been a dd that would have been her name. :)

you actually have one of my DS's names in there too, so we might have slightly similar taste for one half of your names! i quite liked Travis for a few weeks but DH didn't.

i got suggested lots of surnamey names and there are some of people i know that i couldn't use...

Fraser
Murray
Fergus
Duncan
Douglas
Mitchell
Scott

forgotten the rest, will need to look up my name changey threads...

jaggythistle · 06/07/2012 00:13

oh, missed Judith, quite like that too and was one also considered!

good luck ttc. :)

jaggythistle · 06/07/2012 00:53

others i was suggested:

Innes
Malcolm
Kenneth
Dougal

EvenBetter · 07/07/2012 00:29

Love Brodie and Travis!

Darragh
Lorcan
Fintan
Campbell
Robert
Seamus
Evan
Blaine
Dominic

birdofthenorth · 07/07/2012 13:58

Thank you so much for the replies and suggestions everyone, some really great ideas here!

Particularly love Seamus EvenBetter, had never consider that before as more Irish than Scottish but DH & I both love it!

Viviennemary · 07/07/2012 20:37

I really like Violet for a girl. Don't mind Angus from the boys names. Not too keen on the others. Wallace, Murray, Douglas?

birdofthenorth · 08/07/2012 07:13

Really like Murray and like have family links in the region but I can't pronounce my Rs brilliantly which rules it out!!

OP posts:
MoonHare · 08/07/2012 13:25

Love Wyatt, I've been pushing it on these boards for a while, not many seem to agree with me though. I have a posh distant cousin called Wyatt and it always seemed so exotic when we were kids.

TheWicketKeeperIsDown · 08/07/2012 16:19

I love Brodie. It was my favourite of our boys shortlist for DD. It always gets a terrible rep on here, but I think that's primarily from English people. I'm Scottish.

amck5700 · 08/07/2012 17:59

lol, was typing another list of suggestions when I realised they all have Rs in them, but then so does Brodie so maybe it depends where the R is :)

Thinking about the connection with that area, what about Ross, Muir, Cairn or Evan. There is also Gregor, Craig, Torrin, Bruce, Wallace, Connal, Walker?
