we took 4 years to make a baby... She was made in france on the ile de re and we want re/rae as a middle name for her

but how should we spell it? what does re stand for in ile de re, or should we use rae instead?

Merci !!!

Isla would be an option. Or Marina.

FlirtyThirty · 03/07/2012 15:41

I could hazard a guess at meaning...but you may want a more specific answer...

Just a thought though, have you considered similar sounding options that may not be quite such an overt reference to conception location (an embarrasing explanation for name?)...eg. Rachel ?

How about rhea?

squoosh · 03/07/2012 15:43

Rea or Rae?

squoosh · 03/07/2012 15:45

I don't think Ré has a translation that's its name, as in the Island of Ré.

I think.

FlirtyThirty · 03/07/2012 15:57

At a guess of island name origin...The island was once Roman and named Ile de Rhea...and Rhea was a mythological figure...and the mother of Romulus/Remus...

For info on Rhea as a mythological figure...check this out....though I'm sure there are many other sources Google can lead you too...

Very nice idea for a middle name!
I did a little bit of research and here are the names which are linked to Ré:

  • Fern: one explanation for the name Ré is "Ratis" in Galish meaning "fern"
  • Arica: Arica Insula was the latin name of Ré
  • Rhéta/Rheta: woman from Ré in the local dialect
  • Vaubane: reference to Vauban, the military architect who designed the fortifications.
  • Antioche: according to the local legend, Oléron and Ré are the remains of the engulfed antique city. There is a saying: "when Antioche will reappear, Ré will disappear". There is also the "straits of Antioche" between Ré and Oléron.
  • Saline: reference to the salt

I particularly like Rheta and Arica!

squoosh · 03/07/2012 16:01

Why not just give Ré as the middle name?

MagdalenaAlec · 03/07/2012 16:02

Oh, I forgot Rétaise, female inhabitant of Ré in French

surfmama · 03/07/2012 17:44

Hold the AltGr (beside the pace bar) key down as you press the e.

I think Ré is lovely. Short and sweet and a good reasoning behind it Wink
