Katharine or Charlotte?

Hi everyone,

I'm due in a couple of months and still can't make my mind up over a name, which of these do you prefer?

Katharine (nickname Kitty, because I love Pride and Prejudice!)
Charlotte (nickname Lottie)

I also like the spelling Katharine, with an a in the middle, but don't know if it's always going to be spelt wrong by everyone and be really annoying!

any thoughts welcome

Like both, but I prefer Charlotte I think. They were the names of my 2 BF's at school!

jollyrancher · 27/06/2012 13:42

I much prefer Katharine but it she will have to spell it a lot.

Olive28 · 27/06/2012 15:56

Both nice classic names, although I prefer Katherine.

Not keen on Lottie or Kitty, but of the two I prefer Lottie.

So Katherine nn Lottie it is Confused (sorry, doesn't help much, does it?!)

gladders · 27/06/2012 16:02

definitely NOT Katharine - my name is v similar (ie one of the million variants of Catherine) and it's a constant battle! Personally I would avoid the name altogether, but if you are going for it, then definitely go with one of the more usual variants?

Bonsoir · 27/06/2012 16:12

Charlotte is much nicer than Katharine for a first name.

NineTailors · 27/06/2012 16:15

Katharine. So much more unusual than Charlotte.

MaisieM · 27/06/2012 16:17

I prefer Katharine to Charlotte.

My mother once told me that Katharine is the original spelling but I have no idea whether that's true or not.

perceptionreality · 27/06/2012 16:18

I would use either of these names - I think Charlotte has the edge.

pullupapew · 27/06/2012 16:24

Don't do an annoying spelling, they just get everything spelt wrong at school and can get given mugs/pens/whatever from friends with the regular spelling on.

squoosh · 27/06/2012 16:26

Don't like the Katharine spelling, the middle 'a' looks a bit awkward.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 27/06/2012 16:26

Katharine definitely - my dd's middle name is Katharine.

And absolutely Katharine with an a - tis the proper way to spell it imo (from the Greek origins of the word).

Kitty or Kate is a lovely nickname.

Conversely, I think Charlotte is the dullest name in the world. And has the vile nickname Charlie.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 27/06/2012 16:28

xposts maisie - the name comes from the greek word katharos (meaning pure).

Don't ask me why I know this shit, I just devoured a LOT of baby books when pregnant with dd. Grin

Turquoisecat · 27/06/2012 16:33

OMG ferret are you really me? Have I blacked out and started posting my favourite names?!! Wink

I think both names are great (although I prefer Kate to Katharine, as I don't like Kathy as a nn - I live in the Midlands, so it would be kaffeh anyway). I think they are both names that can be both little girly and grown up.

squoosh · 27/06/2012 16:36

They're both equally inoffensive, but also equally dull.

Sorry.

KatyJ26 · 27/06/2012 16:40

Katharine is the old English spelling - whichever way you spell it, she'll get asked how it's spelled - never bothers me, I always say, Katharine with a K. I love it

NettoSuperstar · 27/06/2012 16:43

Katharine.
I love that spelling.

WithACherryOnTop · 27/06/2012 16:45

Charlotte. I love Lottie.

I don't like Katharine at all.

PineappleBed · 27/06/2012 16:49

I prefer charlotte but they're both nice.

Katherine or katharine she's gonna have to spell it all the time. But then that's true of do many names especially now people make up their on spellings so I wouldn't let that put you off.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 27/06/2012 16:53

My MOTHER spelled my dd's middle name wrong once - Kathryn. Kathryn. My own mother.

Just goes to show that whatever happens someone is going to spell the name in a different way.

I don't like Lot

GetOrfMoiiLand · 27/06/2012 16:54

oops

I don't like Lottie either - another black mark against Charlotte in my book.

The name always makes me think of ugly german princesses for some reason.

AndWhenYouGetThere · 27/06/2012 16:54

Katherine with an e. Kitty is adorable.

MaisieM · 27/06/2012 16:57

GetOrf - I'm probably biased anyway as it's my name. People snigger when I tell them it means pure. I have no idea why...

I like telling Kates and Karens that their name is a derivative of mine Grin.

Yes, I always get asked about the spelling and (due to my determined mother) I am never a Kathy or a Kath.

Roseformeplease · 27/06/2012 17:04

Not Kitty because in "Emma"the name is in a riddle as, "a fair but frozen maid" always puzzled me. Love Charlotte and Lottie. Would avoid unusual spellings. Good luck

Johnnydeppsnewmrs · 27/06/2012 17:19

Charlotte is better.

recall · 27/06/2012 17:21

Charlotte
