'm pregnant with my 1st child. My DP has a son who has his surname. As DP and I are not married so whose surname should this baby have?

I feel strange about having a different name to my child. Once, when traveling with my ss we were stopped and questioned at passport control, why was I traveling with a child who was not MY child? where was the parent? My ss was then questioned aggressively did he know me? where was I taking him? This all happened because we were traveling together with different names.
Will this happen if I travel with my child? will I have to carry something to prove that the child is mine if we have different names?
In all the unmarried families I know the children take the fathers name, is this still because of tradition?

When I married DH I kept my name - mainly for work reasons - so when DD was born she had "baby my maiden name on her hospital tag". She took DH's surname and within a couple of months I had changed my surname as I found it very difficult to have a different surname to DD. This was, however personal preference - you have to think about what matters to you.

I do prefer my maiden name though - and still use it for work! Wink

DS has my name as a middle name (so he has two middle names) and DP's name as his surname.

DP and I are getting married in a few years, but I'm still going to keep my name then too!

I have given all 3 DC my DP's name as would have felt strange not to, I think this was originally because we were going to get married soon after DC1 but didn't get round to it! Also I didn't want people thinking I didn't know who her dad was by giving her my name, I have never had any probs proving they are mine either!
