Can we use this name if we aren't Welsh?

I like the name Lowri and wonder if it's ok to use if we don't have a Welsh background.

Also, can Lowri be spelt Lowrie?

yes of course but the correct pronunciation is Low (as in low down) Ree which is not how most non Welsh speaking Welsh would pronounce it, never mind people from outside Wales. Hope this helps

Live how you want to live - I wouldn't have known it was Welsh in origin anyway! These days people spell names how they wish & this is a nice, uncommon name, which at the same time isn't going to cause problems for the child because it's too 'out there'.
(In my opinion).

Unless you're actually Anne Robinson, & have previous for upsetting the Welsh Nation, in which case ignore me...............

doh, meant it can't be spelt Lowrie

madaboutmadmen · 10/06/2012 21:33

...if you want it to be authentic

Both my kids have welsh names and I'm English although both dh's parents are welsh he was born in England. You should use whatever name you like, I don't think many people would realise it was welsh anyway.

Not a problem at all - I'm sure not every Aidan/Kieran/Ryan born last year were Irish.

Lowrie is a popular Shetland boy name, originally a nickname for Lawrence. Look on you tube for "Lowrie sells his oo" for pronunciation!

I know many Lowris and they do get called Lawry all the time, which is a bit annoying for them.

ScorpionQueen · 11/06/2012 15:29

Do you mean for a boy or girl? I've only known girls called Lowri (I am Welsh) but it would seem Scots use it for boys. It's a nice name either way.
