Alec, Lawrence, Jasper, Theo, Quinn or....?

With a few weeks left to go, DP and I have finally agreed on some possible names for DS2:

Alexander (Alec): DP generally not a fan of fairly standard names like this, but has (grudgingly) agreed because of Greek hero associations and fact that Alec not commonly used as nickname in England;

Laurence / Lawrence: possible nn Larry or Laurie. Both quite like this, but a bit meh about nn choices;

Jasper;

Theodore (Theo): both like this but worried it could date due to shooting up in popularity in last few years (Theo Walcott effect?);

Quinn: both like this but a little worried that too close to quim (which I'd never heard of before coming on Mumsnet)?

Would be great to get views and other name suggestions. DS1 is Hector. Some names we considered but ruled out for on reason or another: Magnus, Rufus, Hugo, Orson, Leo.

Jasper.

diddl · 08/06/2012 07:49

Rufus is fantastic.

But if you´ve really ruled it out, I like Jasper.

javotte · 08/06/2012 08:35

DS is the French spelling of Alexander, so of course I find it fantastic.
Jasper is my name-crush at the moment.

underthevalley · 08/06/2012 08:54

Quinn I thinks becoming more of a girls name.

I like Alec but I would be concerned that he would become a Alex

Really like Jasper

marilynmonroe · 08/06/2012 08:54

My ds is hector too. When I was pregnant with dc2 we were going to call him george but he turned out to be a girl!

I thought hector and George sounded like two old men! V cute.

ShowOfHands · 08/06/2012 09:01

Hector is marvellous. A couple of your choices sound a bit meh next to it. You need another marvellous name next to it. Rufus would fit this but 2nd to that Jasper. What about Rudi? Ruairi? Amos?

Quinn will always be too close to Quim to me.

I like Laurie too but it's very different to Hector.

StepOutOfSpring · 08/06/2012 09:49

Theodore, Lawrence or Rufus.

snowrevolution · 08/06/2012 09:51

I really liked Rufus but couldn't convince DP. It has the potential to sound a bit "rah" next to our unusual surname.

Not keen on George (only because I knew a not very nice one at school).

Like Ruairi / Rory, but unfortunately doesn't work with our surname. Not keen on Rudi (due to a standing joke about this name amongst our friends).

Still open to suggestions for alternatives. Just amazed that DP and I managed to find any names we vaguely agreed on (it's been a torturous process). But do wonder whether there's an elusive name out there that we'll both fall in love with.

Jasper is nice, I do know theo's and Rufus's so they are getting popular if that bothers you, love Edwin and Nathaniel too

widdles · 08/06/2012 10:40

They are all names i would use and dh just said he likes these so they must be pretty good.

I think it depends on the surname as i liked alot of name but couldn't have them due to not going with our surname

survivingspring · 08/06/2012 15:04

Lawrence with nn Laurie - love it!!

Alec is also nice.

Theo is already really popular although I do like it. Quinn is definitely Quim in my mind (rightly or wrongly Grin)

minipie · 08/06/2012 15:12

I love Alexander nn Alec (on our shortlist too) or Laurence nn Laurie (would be on shortlist but v similar to family name).

Quinn is a girl's name to me (see Glee)

Jasper I'm not keen on.

I love Rufus and like Leo.

Other possibilities that occured to me reading your OP: Justin, Felix, Dominic, Austin, Roscoe, Angus

MagdalenaAlec · 08/06/2012 15:17

I am biased since I have an Alec.. I love his name even though it was DH's idea
Quite like Theodore and Jasper too but I prefer Caspar.

Not keen on Quinn (a bit girly I think)

hugebumpbelly · 08/06/2012 19:05

I love Alec and Quinn.

I only know boy Quinns and think it sounds very masculine. Makes a nice alternative to (the overused) Finn. (Never heard of quim either Confused).

rachel1970 · 08/06/2012 20:37

Love Theodore and Quentin, which you could shorten to Quinn.

amck5700 · 08/06/2012 20:49

Emit, Harris, Lukas or what about Sandy as the shortened version of Alexander or go for the proper Gaelic thing and have Alastair instead?

amck5700 · 08/06/2012 20:51

.......or Gregory

HRHOliviaMumsnet · 08/06/2012 20:55

Sebastian?
Both Alexander and Lawrence are were on our list for unconceived DC3 Wink DS1 and DS2 but they both just didn't look like either.

VerityClinch · 08/06/2012 20:57

I know a Hector who has a Horace for a brother (and Octavia for a sister - twins - but could be Octavius for a boy)?

VerityClinch · 08/06/2012 20:58

Oh, Felix is good!

snowrevolution · 08/06/2012 21:57

Thanks for all the suggestions. We like and have already considered some of these (eg Felix, Angus, Alastair, Harris, Sebastian) but they either don't work with our surname or have already been nabbed by other family members. DP keen on Horatio (so close to Horace) but I have vetoed!

DP leaning towards Lawrence or Jasper; me towards Alec. Think we might just have to see what he looks like!

Love Theo and Quinn!

I know a little Horatio - quite like it actually.
