What are some nice Scottish boys names?

DS1 George was named after his Scottish great grandfather and while not a particularly Scottish name, I would like some more Scottish boys names to add to my list.

So give me your best!

Love Fergus, Murdo and Struan....

My absolute favourite is Hamish but my cousin named her son this 12 years ago. I still adore it to this day.

Rory and Fraser have been vetoed by DH. I think Rory is an absolutely gorgeous name. Maybe I will try it again....

Do you think you can have a Fergus if your surname starts with an "S" or does it run into each other? I.e. Fergus Simpson or Fergus Sainsbury. Obviously my surname is neither of those but it is similar.

I love Lennox, Ross, Struan, Ivor/Ivar, Bran, Gillis, Edwin, Shuard, Strachan and Blair. Also once met a Kelso, presumably after the town in the Borders, which I liked.

Not sure about Fergus S-name - I think you have to make a very clear distinction between the end of Fergus and the beginning of the surname, which not everyone would find easy to say. Fergus Sainsbury could easily be heard as Fergus Ainsbury and so on.

Love Hamish. I liked Cameron but current PM has ruined that one. Calum and Ewan are nice.

topbannana · 07/06/2012 11:03

Any future DS will be Rory (DH could not spell it the other way!) Everyone I have ever mentioned it to hates it though Hmm

Hamish is great, I LOVED Duncan but it is forever linked in my mind to a quite unsavoury character so was a no-no for us. How about Archie?

TheSurgeonsMate · 07/06/2012 11:19

Is Cosmo not Scottish, squoosh? Sometimes its better to ask the English what names are Scottish as up here it can be hard to tell Confused.

squoosh · 07/06/2012 11:44

Hmm, I'd assume Cosmo was Greek. But I suppose names don't have to originate in a country to be associated with that country. I associate Andrew with Scotland and Patrick with Ireland although they are neither Scottish nor Irish in origin.

Rory is a great name but I really don't like Ruaridh, sounds too weedy.

Hamish is ace. He might need a Perthshire estate to go with it though :)
