DH and I are startin to think about names, we're not finding out the sex so need plenty of options.
I've been looking through websites and books but nothings massively jumping out.

It needs to not be massively popular if possible but not ridiculously unusual for a northern working class family Smile
Also needs to work with a surname similar sounding to Olsen beginning with A

Names currently on the list are:

Girls
Meredith
Lara
Alana/Alannah/Lana
Lois
Sofia/Sophia
Juno
Matilda
Tamara

Boys
Seth
Rory
Jasper
Jensen
Jonas
Roman
Louis
Finn
Aneirin

Some names I like and some I kind of like but not too sure about

How about Iris for a girl? One of my antenatal friends named her DD that, I love it. I like Juno in your options, and Louis for a boy.

ellangirl · 05/06/2012 20:57

You ruled out Elfie then Grin
You have some lovely names there. My thoughts on the surname are that something ending in a e.g. Lara might sound odd with surname, but that's your choice of course.
I like Juno best for a girl from the list, and Rory or Jensen for boys.

Clargo55 · 05/06/2012 21:05

How about Reuben for a boy ?

Jensen is my fav from your list Smile

WhereMyMilk · 05/06/2012 21:21

Don't like your list, sorry.

How would you pronounce Alana (sil is Alana pronounced A-lane-er) and i must admit to preferring A-larn-ah?

Anyway i love Meridith, Matilda and Lois, Sofia is okay but i find quite common a few more (being northern working class ahem):

Susannah
Martha
Tabitha
Georgina
Felicity
Madelaine
Sasha
Heidi
Erin
Ebony

Boys wise i adore Seth (but OH keeps saying no! grrr) , and Jasper is my cat but i LOVE that name ha ha!

How about

Gabriel
Jude
Jonah
Sebastien (oh again vetoes this!)
Felix
Zachariah

I'd completely forgotten about Elfie Grin baby brain strikes again. I do like it but I don't know how it would go with our surname.

Iris isn't bad. I do like Reuben, Hermione and Juliet.

Nappies I like a few of your suggestions. Alana would be pronounced A-larn-ah. But ive just realised it may not work with our surname.

It feels such a big thing to pick something for life.

I love Lois. Massively jumps out as the nicest name for me - a bit quirky, but classy. Lovely.

Lana is nice. Lara, too. I prefer Laura, though.
Meredith is OK - but I feel a big zeitgesity thing around it and believe it will be much more popular very soon.

Matilda and Sophia variations are very popular compared to some of your other choices.

Juno is awful.

Tamara is pretty, but Tammy is a horrid nn, sorry!

Of your boy's names, I love Aneurin or Louis (Loo-ee, not Lewis).

Really dislike the others, sorry. Jensen is dreadful.

TheRealMrsHannigan · 07/06/2012 10:44

Soe suggestions:

Girls -
Noelle
Aisling (Pronounced Ash-ling)
Bethany

Boys -
Isaac
Toby
Benjamin

How Northern and how working class and how much does it matter to you? Only ask as I live in a Scottish farming community, and pretty much everything on your list would most definitely come in the ridiculously unusual category around here. Except maybe Rory.

I like Meredith, Juno, Tamara, Jonas, Rory and Roman. Not so keen on the rest and not sure names ending in -a always fit well with an A surname?

Miranda, Nancy, Zoe, Naomi, Zara, Cleo, Adeline, Iris, Audrey, Imogen, Phoebe.
Asher, Cameron, Adam, Jonah, Robin, Bram, Curtis, Aidan, Jago, Joshua.

Pasiphae · 07/06/2012 11:05

Imogen, Bethan, Eloise, Arianna, Esther, Vivien, Cora, Ines, Pearl, Sadie?

Saul, Heath, Monty, Rafferty, Julian, Jacob, Jago, Milan, Tavion, Loyd, Flyn?

birdofthenorth · 07/06/2012 11:27

Juno is great from your girl's list.

Love Aneurin (I would spell it the Bevan way as that's best known), Rory and Jonas (though this one is a bit faddy- as is Jenson, which has real flash-in-the-pan popularity and will date, sorry)
