How would you pronounce Joel?

DH and I are thinking of Joel for a boy (we don't know yet what we're having). I have always pronounced it JO-ul, i.e. two syllables. But it came up in one of the readings at church last Sunday, and the reader pronounced it Jole, which I don't like as much. Anyone know which of these is the standard pronunciation?

I say Jole to rhyme with sole.

I think if you didn't like it that way then it's a no go as plenty of people will call him Jole.

OddBoots · 01/06/2012 20:38

'Jole' although if I'm feeling festive it is 'Joe-ell'

Bother, might have to rethink then as Jole seems to be the majority! Thanks, everyone.

Are you a Northerner OP? Because I know a Joel and he's Jo-ul up North and Joel down South....saying that, I am a Northerner but quite "well spoken" and not very typical of the area and I say "Jole"

mirry2 · 01/06/2012 21:01

Jole like sole

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 01/06/2012 21:02

My DS is Joel as in 'Jole', but most of the time he's Joely or Joely Foo Foo or Panda or Tinker etc. I think it's a lovely name Crown
