Betsy v Meredith v Scarlett

If we have a girl I have been keen on Betsy for years since DS1 - it was our girls choice. Would probably go with Elizabeth for birth certificate.

But we do really like Meredith - however I dont like Merry as a NN - I would like Edie - but then this could be hard to get people to go along with especially as DS is called Edgar - we never ever call him Eddie but nursery do :( . Also think its a slightly irksome name (which I like!) but will probably get the same negative reactions at first that Edgar did.

DH recently suggested Scarlett - which was a fave of mine way back when having a kid was just something that would happen a long time away.

So whats your preference!!

Our surname is a bit cute but not excessively so.

Meredith is the best by a country mile.

WithACherryOnTop · 30/05/2012 21:08

Meredith is beautiful, and works well at any age.

Betsy isn't at all nice, but Elizabeth is.

Scarlett is ugly.

If your surname is 'cutesy' then I'd avoid Betsy.

McKayz · 30/05/2012 21:10

Betsy! I love love love Betsy but DH said no as his Nan is Elizabeth and BIL & SIL called their DD a nickname of his Grans name so it would sound like we were copying them.

5madthings · 30/05/2012 21:11

love love love Meredith, this was nearly dd's name, she is Merryn :) we dont call her merry tho and you wouldnt have to if you didnt want to, meredith can be shortened to edie/edith as well, i really love it.

not keen on betsy purely as my aunt had a dog called that, but i know someone who has recently named her dd Betsy and its very sweet for a baby name but yes to ELizabeth as a full name and then she can choose what to be called when older :)

Scarlett i always liked but dp didnt, its nice as well :)

monkeymoma · 30/05/2012 21:11

I love Scarlett, its really lovely and not as "now" ish as Meredith
I think Scarlett is feminine but also strong, not too frilly

cheesesarnie · 30/05/2012 21:13

not keen on meredith but love betsy and scarlett

Whatevertheweather · 30/05/2012 21:13

I love Meredith - dp vetoed it otherwise it would still be on my list! Like Scarlett too. Don't like Betsy I'm afraid.

StepOutOfSpring · 30/05/2012 21:14

Meredith

Lunarlyte · 30/05/2012 21:40

Elizabeth 'Betsy' for me :)

BelleTheBeatnik · 30/05/2012 21:43

Ooh love Meredith. What about Meryl (as in Streep) as a NN?

BellaOfTheBalls · 30/05/2012 21:44

Betsy makes me think of Sleb baby names (Denise Van Outen). Meredith is beautiful. Scarlett is a bit "common" now although I do know someone who uses Letty as a NN.

Edie and Edgar might be a bit of a mouthful though?

pegster · 30/05/2012 22:05

Meredith is fab, was on my short list but had a boy. Like Betsy too but would use Betsan (welsh) as the full name. Not a fan of Scarlett, overdone recently IMHO

evamummy · 30/05/2012 22:07

Meredith definately.

Scarlett is a little scar to me. Betsy is ok but I think these cutesy names may soon start to fall out of favour and feel a little dated.

BeehavingBaby · 30/05/2012 22:10

Adore Meredith - Scarlett a bit stripper and Elizabeth/ Betsy fine but getting very popular where I live.

rocket74 · 30/05/2012 23:10

ooh - mixed bag of response. I know that Betsy is a bit celeb - and everytime i open a magazine it seems some yummy mummy talking about her yummy life has a little Betsy!
surprised Meredith so popular - but it has been popping up a few times recently.

decisions decisions!

I love them all! Sorry Grin.

sparkle12mar08 · 31/05/2012 10:14

Meredith is beautiful and very under used. Scarlett is okay but very of the moment and will date badly to me. You could try Remy/Remmy as a nickname for Meredith? Betsy okay for a middle name if you really love it but is not first name material imo.

kirrinIsland · 31/05/2012 10:34

Meredith is my favourite girls name. DP veto'd it otherwise that would be DD's name :(

Booette · 31/05/2012 10:41

Betsy reminds me of old people because it's my MIL's name (not a nn, that is her proper name) I do know of someone that has a Bethany nn Betsy.

I love Meredith, it was always on my list. My only concern was the nn Merry, I'd worry I'd end up with a grumpy daughter called Merry!

I love Scarlett too.

VeronicaSpeedwell · 31/05/2012 10:42

Another vote for Meredith!

AllRiseForHerVaj · 31/05/2012 11:01

Betsy short for Elizabeth is lovely. Much nicer than others.

SLVC · 31/05/2012 12:13

I'm quite surprised Meredith is so popular, it's not to my tastes at all. I bracket it with Madison type names.. Love Edith, but perhaps you wouldn't want Edith and Edgar (which I love).

I think Elizabeth nn Betsy is fab. Choose that!

MoonHare · 31/05/2012 13:48

Meredith is by far the nicest of your ideas. If you don't like the nn Merry then don't use it and ask others not to if you hear them doing it, people usually take the lead from parents. if she wants people to call her that as she gets older then that's up to her as the bearer of the name.

I disagree about it being a Madison type of name, I think that Scarlett is one of those names though.

I really don't like Betsy at all.

Meredith goes with Edgar far better than the other two names.

lovemygirlivy · 31/05/2012 14:31

I dislike Meredith. I love Betsy (you could always use Beatrice as a full name too). Scarlett is alright, but it is no where near as lovely/classic as Edgar.

GoPoldark · 31/05/2012 14:34

Betsan if Betsy

Meredith otherwise - though MUCH prefer Merryn
