Over the last few weeks I have suggested countless lovely names to DH, all of which have been rejected out of hand.

A small selection for your perusal

Penelope
Felicity
Marie
Cassandra
Aria
Francesca
Talia

Jonas
Cassian
Hector
Joseph
Tristan
James
Noah

None of which I consider to be too 'out there'. He hated them all.

Today he came up with his first, and only suggestion so far. Marvin! I apologise to any proud parents of Marvins out there, I am sure your Marvs are wonderful, but DH, Marvin? Really?

This baby naming thing is just not going to happen, is it? FFS we're going to be on the News as the couple who failed to name their baby.

Welllll, on the plus side, I think of Marvin Gaye. Minus side I'm thinking of Marvin the Martian!

I'm not too sure how a boy/man named Marvin would get on in the UK (assuming thats where you're from).

My usually lovely DH was an absolute fucking nightmare when we were trying to decide on DD1s name. I wanted Mia Grace but he was very difficult about it. He wanted her to be called Naomi, which, is fairness is a perfectly respectable name it just that I'm not struck on it.

If he couldn't have Naomi, then Mia too was banned. We
Compromised and she was called neither name, but it took me about a year to get used to her name (and actually like it, I'm sorry to admit. Love it now because it is her name, IYSWIM).

He wanted to name DD2 Kitty - DD1 is well into 'Hello Kitty' so I wasn't keen on that, either. I put my foot well and truly down this time and ?I? chose DD2s name.

Learn from me, Psammead, lear from me ... ?lol?

Lunarlyte · 22/05/2012 21:11

Missed the 'n' off that last 'learn' there, sorry!

Psammead · 22/05/2012 21:12

Marvin Gaye is indeed a legend.

But still NO.

Wasn't that android called Marvin... 'size the brain of a planet and here I am opening doors...'

BigHairyFlowers · 22/05/2012 21:16

Yes, the one from Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy! Grin

So, in comparison, Marvin is probably better than Slartibartfast...?

Emphaticmaybe · 22/05/2012 21:16

Hi psammead - our cat is called Marv short for Marvin after a character in Frank Miller's 'Sin City' is your DH perhaps a fan?

WhereYouLeftIt · 22/05/2012 21:17

Martian

Paranoid android

Psammead · 22/05/2012 21:19

So on the one hand we have Mr. Gaye.

On the other hand we have Marvin The Paranoid Android, Marvin the Martian, Starvin Marvin and Marvin the Tap Dancing Horse according to google.

And Emphatic's cat who I am unsure of where to place, really. Is it a lovely cat?

My kids father is a Marvin. His brothers name is a lot worse but I won't say what it is as it would definitely out me lol

bronze · 22/05/2012 21:22

Makes me think of miserable Marvin from hhgttg

FridayOLeary · 22/05/2012 21:24

Charlie and Lola's friend Marv.

Perhaps you could consider Mervyn?

LynetteScavo · 22/05/2012 21:25

Makes me think of Marv, Charlie's friend in Charlie and Lola.

It's not that bad.

Emphaticmaybe · 22/05/2012 21:26

He is a lovely cat. The character in the book is great though, but only if you like psychotics with a heart of gold. Maybe not the right name for your lovely baby on this recommendation.
Good luck.

NarkedPuffin · 22/05/2012 21:29

Casper?

Liking your names a lot. DH used to hate most of the names I suggested. I found the trick was to wait two weeks and then present them as new options. He needed time to get used to them.

Annunziata · 22/05/2012 21:32

At least it's unusual?

Lunarlyte · 22/05/2012 21:38

Naked I love your tactic, there. Very stealthy. Tom Clancy would be proud.

And I'd totally forgotten about Starvin' Marvin form South Park!

Lunarlyte · 22/05/2012 21:41

FWIW, I like Penelope and Francesca; James and Noah from your list :) All way better than Marvin. Do what you need to get your way Wink

BreakingBad · 22/05/2012 22:00

Marvin is awful, my God! lol

I love Penelope, Felicity and Francesca.

Joseph is a good strong name. Hector is great.

Your DH needs to bow down to your superior tastes Grin

Meglet · 22/05/2012 22:03

Marvin is good, if I met a child called it I would think he was very very cool. But I like Hector more.

RillaBlythe · 23/05/2012 05:58

I know a toddler Marvin. His parents are very hip.

TinkerMaloo · 23/05/2012 08:08

Just say no! You will find something eventually that works for both of you, but god knows its not easy lol

DaisyMaisyJessicaEmily · 23/05/2012 08:10

\there's a Marvin in JLS isn't there? Maybe he is a closet fan? Grin

hamncheese · 23/05/2012 08:25

We've had our names picked since 20 weeks (now 28) and found just bringing up a name problematic as it became like a competition and such. This is the way we came to our conclusions seemed to work:

Buy a baby name book (like penguin dictionary of first names) and each separately go through it and write down all the boy and girl names you like on a list. Then take the two lists and find any that you both put down and that's your short list. It's so much easier squabbling over the short list because no-one can get pissy for no reason as you initially chose that name.

Mind you, there we both had similar ideas in terms of the kind of names (wanted traditional but not common ones) so if one of you is into really unusual and the other not this probably still wouldn't work!

MamaGeekChic · 23/05/2012 08:31

I think i'm safe to assume that you don't live in scotland and your DH has never seen 'The Scheme'...? I very much doubt there will be any baby Marvin north of the border for the forseeable.
