What name meanings do you love?

I would struggle to name a baby if the meaning of the name was negative, and also if it were overtly religious, or dull.

The names Felix, Felicity, Tate etc are all made nicer by their happy meanings.

Do you have any favourites? DD's name means 'light'.

We only avoided names with obvious negative (mainly Latin) meanings like like Claudia (lame), Cecilia (blind) or Hector (bully).

DD's has no obvious meaning and DS's means 'fifth' but we simply chose them because we loved them, irrespective of the meaning.

Dd1s name means 'father's joy' which was very apt as she was born on father's day.
Proposed name for dd2 unfortunaly has a religious meaning 'god's promise' I'm an atheist but it is the only names oh and I can agree on!

agora1 · 13/05/2012 22:27

Dd1s name means 'much wanted child', which she was; dd2s name means 'love' which she is.

My sons name means bright army and my daughters means help and my other daughters means ivy the plant - so as you can tell i didn't pay much attention to the meanings.

Lunarlyte · 19/05/2012 22:01

Both our daughters' names are hyphenated and their names were specifically chosen 1) Because we like them and 2) because of their meanings.

DD1s name means 'all, complete' 'beautiful fairy maiden' and the second part of her name 'grace; to be graced' (I take this to mean to be graced by her presence).

DD2s name means 'strong and beautiful' 'struggle, sorrow' and the second part of her name 'precious like a pearl'

Both girls took a while to conceive: DD1 9 months; DD2 2 years and 6 Clomid cycles. So, the 'graced by your presence' was very important for DD1. I literally broke my heart with want for DD2, so the 'sorrow' meaning to her name is important but I will always tell her that she was the joy that came from such sorrow and she is indeed, very precious :)

As lunarlyte that gave me a lump in my throat

winkle2 · 19/05/2012 22:38

To add: I would love to know your children's names

scottishmummy · 19/05/2012 22:46

our kids names have meaning and significance to us
and no I'd not pick name with neg connotations eg lilith

BikeRunSki · 19/05/2012 22:53

DD's name means 'beloved' in French, but that's not why we chose it.

My Dd was given an unofficial African name that means 'my joy is full' because of her happy disposition.

SinicalSanta · 19/05/2012 23:17

I pick names for the sound primarily but if I didn't like the meanings I wouldn't use them

HybridTheory · 19/05/2012 23:41

#1 Gift from God
#2 Defender of Men

Think they are both positive although I chose the names before looking at the meanings I wouldn't have wanted a name with a 'negative' meaning.

oikopolis · 19/05/2012 23:44

i find names with "bad" meanings totally unusable. Blaise ("stammerer") and Claudia ("cripple") come to mind.

there are so many lovely name meanings out there really. Olwen "white footsteps" (metaphor for the path of moonlight over water) comes to mind.
