would you... sounds like a famous name

One of my favourite girls' names, when paired with our surname, sounds like the name of a famous singer. She was a well respected blues singer, not a naff popstar or R&B singer if that makes any difference. For example, it would be like our surname being Holway and calling our daughter Billie. Would you, could you?

My feelings are:

  1. The singer may not be that well-known among people of my daughter's generation
  2. The child would grow into the name so it would become associated with her, not with the singer

Or am I wrong and it will really really annoy me? Grin

What's the name? First name I mean.

Psammead · 11/05/2012 14:55

Ella? Nina? Etta?

If one of them, I think it would be brilliant to have a similar name. You could do a lot worse than that!

TremoloGreen · 11/05/2012 14:58

Psammead Yeah, one of them Grin

Must. not. out. self....

Ok. Well. If it's Ella, and the surname is Fitz-something then she might get a little weary of the comments.

If it's Nina and the surname is something like Simons then I think it's not too obvious and you'll get away with it.

Etta - umm... Jones? Jameson? I think you'd get away with this.

But a Fitz-surname is quite unusual in itself, so I wouldn't necessarily use Ella with it.

Hope that makes sense!

Our sons name sounds like a very famous president, i think its cool!

So yes, i would. Actually noone has ever mentioned it, and it is one letter different, so people either dont notice or just dont say :)

What Psammead said.

It would be a long, long time before anyone in her age group saw any connection. I would say go for it.

Ella Fitz--- might get 'elephant' though.
