just wondering about wrong pronounciation!

Was just wondering if you have a child with an unusual name which people often pronounce wrong do you/would you correct them?!

People often do this to my ds mainly family members. I don't usually correct I just make a point of saying his name a lot in the correct way in hope they catch on!

I have an unusual name but most people called me a nickname.

I realised recently that my mom is the only one who calls me my full name and she pronounces it wrong.

Chaos, what IS your full name? PM this instant. I only know your nickname (buggerchops). People pronounce my name wrong all the time. It's not difficult, just not common in the uk.

You mean YOUR FAMILY are pronouncing your ds's name wrong?

Not close family but some do, and at the doctors they do it and colleagues! I think it might look different written down I wonder if I should have chose a different spelling!

Well I've not seen that name before, but I would say "Roh - may" as it looks a bit like Roman which is a boy's name.

Is that how you pronounce it?

If your family are pronouncing it wrong, I'd definitely tell them, otherwise they'll continue to get it wrong for years.

They have said 'rommy' 'roamie' 'remmy' one even said 'moray,'

My own mum struggled for a few weeks but thankfully gets it right now!

If you spelt it "Romae" the Latin I learned at school would resurface, and I would say "Ro-my". I'd say "Romay" as "Romay" as "Ro-May", but wouldn't have felt very confident about it!

I think the need to correct people constantly is an inherent feature of names with more than one pronunciation, or unfamiliar ones where phonic knowledge still brings more than one possibility.

I have this problem with my sons name! It was fine until another name got popular

It sounds silly but I don't always feel confident correcting people in case their a bit "oohh get her!"

So is like reh-may (if sounds like rennae with an m) rather than row-may.

Tbh the spelling romay says row-may to me rather than reh may.

Yeah I prefer to just say it myself the correct way rather than correct people as the spelling has proved confusing!

I have a Lucia. People pick a pronounciation they like and go with it. I don't mind. We generally call her Lucy though. She can pick when she's older.

I would say Row-may as well, am a bit confused as to how you (OP) pronounces it now though, so not sure if I am right!
I had this very argument with a friend the other night, surely the parents chose the name and pronunciation, and that is how they want it said, regardless of if it is the 'right' way or not surely calling them anything else is not using their name!

My DS has a recognizable (may be even gasp "common") British name that is mispronounced in America (where we live). First, I thought people were taking the piss because it is such arsefart way to say her name. The problem is using a hard G instead of a soft G - it is equivalent of pronouncing George as "Geh-or-geh". I do correct people - less so now she is older and her name is established in our circle of friends. I don't know if that helps you - just to say even the simplest of names can be mispronounced by stupid people.
