Names like Alice?

I'm 36 wks and love the name Alice but DP's sister (though not pregnant and not planning to be soon) really wants it. DP and his ex-wife already used the grandmothers name which his sister really wanted so I'd feel bad for stealing this one too! Are there any similar names you can think of other than Alicia - too similar and too American sounding for me.

I have an Alice. Also like the following names:
Louisa
Lucy
Frances
Eleanor
Anna
Catherine

Or what about Ailis, the Irish form of Alice (pronounced Ay-lish). Too close?

I always put Alice & Lucy together too!

Similar "type" names for me are Laura, Martha, Harriet, Louisa, Kate, Mary, Rose, Emily, Charlotte, Juliet, Eleanor.

Isla

FWIW, I think if you are deciding to respect her wish to have an Alice, you need to not try and get the same sound or a very close approximation of Alice ie Alicia. You need to leave Alice entirely and find something else that you love.

(I know a family with an Olivia and Alivia as cousins, and one with Emily and Amelie)

PercyFilth · 04/05/2012 21:18

Don't agree. As has been mentioned, the s-i-l may never have a daughter anyway. But I see no harm in two cousins having slightly similar sounding names or even the same name

I wanted Alice, and couldn't have it for surname reasons, and it took me ages to get over it as I couldn't think of a name I liked as much (though love DDs name - Kate - now). I know you're being kind but you're the one who is pregnant now. If you really love Alice I would personally just go for it.

Like you, I wouldn't use Alice - there are so many names out there and it's not as though this is a family name (on your side) or something - it clearly means a lot to her and even though she may never have a child & get to use it, at least it wont be the salt rubbing into the wound.

quickhide · 05/05/2012 14:22

I had Alice on my list! Also had
Polly
Martha
Imogen
Hazel
Tess
Freya
Iris
Eliza
Elise

I'm a Sophie Alice, and I always thought that went nicely. Using it as a middle name wouldn't mean she then couldn't use it in the future as a first name. Very nice of you not to want to use it, I don't think I could either in that situation.

Born2BRiiiled · 06/05/2012 08:20

Josie, full name Josephine if you feel you need a "proper" name. I love this name.
Elizabeth is nice. Also classic.
Elinor is perhaps along similar lines.
Good luck. I would also think really carefully about not using Alice if you really love it though.
