Letting go of your favourite name when unable to use it?

Hi all, for those of you who have been unable your favoutite name which you've perhaps had lined up for years - how did you go about 'letting go' of it - if that makes any sense. I won't be able to use two of my all time favourites as they just don't go with our surname and am worried another name will seem second best and I'll never get used to it!

Why were you unable to use your favourite name and did you find yourself thinking of your DC as that name for a while? Do you like your DC's actual name and have you got used to it now?

I think probably just acknowledging that you really could. not. inflict that name on your child what with your surname? Once you agree that it really isn't an option, I think you get over it pretty quickly (I also have one of those surnames that a lot of stuff won't go with) :)

keep the name for a future pet so you can still use it, though not ideal i know!

Meglet · 30/04/2012 17:32

I'm not letting go of Bruno, I'm going to get a little dog one day and use it then Grin.

I think that once you name your child something else, they become that name so you don't think about it so much. My all time favourite name was Matilda but DH wasn't keen. In the end, we named dd Rosa and now I really couldn't imagine her called Matilda, she is not a Matilda at all and really suits Rosa Smile

ToryLovell · 30/04/2012 17:42

YY to keeping it for a pet.

I really wanted to call my DD Pheobe. I had loved the name since I was a child. Then, along came Pheobe from Friends. I thought it would be really popular, and everyone would think I had got it from there. So I didn't use it.

I'm a bit cross with myself now, if I ever think about it, as my reasons seem a bit silly to me now, but it doesn't ruin my life!

I really, really wanted Theo for DS but DH just didn't like it at all. In my mind it was the perfect name (even now I think it would have suited him) but we had to compromise. I genuinely struggled with our name choice for 6 months or so after having DS but he loves his name and it is still quite unusual so in hindsight it was a good thing!!

Polkadotfanatic · 30/04/2012 20:34

I wanted Lola and everyone told me it was a stripper name (pah), so I bought a Nissan Figaro (car with a personality) and called her Lola instead. :)

I am sure you can find a name you love as equally, but not until you let go of the name and stop comparing any new names against it. I suppose you have to look at all new names with an open mind and fresh outlook :)

Good luck x

Try the Baby Name Wizard book; it has all sorts of "alternative" suggestions for names that you might like but can't use for whatever reason.

Well I admit that I liked the name Crystal for a girl. DH said they would call her Crystal Chandelier at school. So I gave up. She is called Claire. Quite relieved now I didn't call her that.

reddaisy · 30/04/2012 23:55

I wanted Tilly. But he was a DS and not a Dd so he is Thomas. I still love the name Tilly though!

Alligatorpie · 01/05/2012 08:01

I had 2 favorite names that dh wouldn't go for dd. Six years later, he still wont use either for dc 2.
But dd really suits her name ( although she would have suited both of others too.) she has named some of her dolls those names as she knows they were what I wanted to call her.

DogEared · 01/05/2012 08:11

I wanted a Bessie. DH said noooo, because it was Elizabeth and that was the Queen and he is a Smiths fan... :o (I have DSes anyway...)
I have forced myself to concentrate on the negatives of the name, and that has really worked for me. What are the names OP?

littlepie · 01/05/2012 20:29

Whilst considering names for DD2 I realised that there were a few names that I absolutely loved, but that was because I would like to be called that.

DH had to talk me down from my more outlandish ideas and with hindsight DD will thank him for it!

Like someone else said whatever you do decide on will become your DCs name. You can always consider one for a middle name like I did but even then DH wouldn't let me get away with Lettice so will have to encourage DD to call a doll this

I cried a little but then confined Rory to a little happy fantasy land. Now I'm over it.

nowwearefour · 01/05/2012 20:36

i loved Jacob but a) Dh doesnt and b) i only had dd's so it wasnt going to happen for me either!
