Pronunciation of Freya

Doitnicelyplease · 24/04/2012 18:17

As per my other thread, Freya is on the shortlist for DD2.

I wanted to ask general opinion on pronunciation as I live overseas and have never met one or heard the name said out loud.

Am I right thinking it is Fray-a? or is it Free-a? Confused

My dd's middle name is Freya, and it is pronounced Fray-a.

fray-ah

I had a guinea pig called freya once. Lovely name. If I'd had a daughter it would have been on the list.

Never heard it pronounced Freeya. As far as I've heard it's Fraya. Lovely name. Unbelievably popular. Know 4 born just in the past year!

Janoschi · 24/04/2012 20:17

I'd say Freya, though the only one I know in real life is called Fry-ah. As in Deep Fat Fryer! She lives in Berlin and is half German half Dutch.

Doitnicelyplease · 24/04/2012 20:28

1950shousewife - luckily for me we don't live in the UK and the name is pretty much unheard of here.

My issue will be more with people going 'eh?' if I choose it for DD2!

Perfect then. My friend here (also abroad) has twins, and one is a Freya and people go loopy for the name as it's totally unusual here.
I would'nt let the popularity of the name put you off anyway. A gorgeous name is a gorgeous name!

Doitnicelyplease · 24/04/2012 20:31

Couldn't agree more DD1 is an Eva after all!

Fray-a. Reminds me of frayed cloth.

BBQJuly · 24/04/2012 21:05

Or Fray Bentos pies.

applepieinthesky · 25/04/2012 20:03

Fray-a. Have never heard it pronounced any other way.

bigfunnylass · 25/04/2012 20:12

my dd is Freya....Fray-aa....and because it's pronounced this way family and friends spell it incorrectly ALL THE TIME!!! (gorgeous name btw!)
