We are really struggling to come up with names that we both like. So far we have:

Girls:
Isabella
Charlotte
Sophia
Lucy
All with middle name Anne after DHs mum who passed away when he was a child.
We both like the name Elizabeth but can't use it as it's DH's cousins name.

Boys:
Daniel
Lucas
David
Thomas
Jack

With middle name David if not used as first name, as DH's middle name and his Dad's name is David and is also family name on my side. I am less keen on David as first name as baby would have 3 living relatives with this name. Other middle name option possibly Ivor after my Grandad (weirdly this is growing on me as a first name but I can't see DH going for it).

Our surname is the sort that goes with any name so we are lucky in that respect. DH likes names that can be shortened to nicknames if at all possible.

All lovely classic names, don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

All nice names :)

Isabella Anne - the a sounds run together
Charlotte Anne - flows well
Sophia Anne - the a sounds run together
Lucy Anne - lovely, my favourite of your options :)

Daniel David - the two names are too similar
Lucas David - flows well but not keen on Lucas, how about Luke David?
David something - like, David Thomas would go well, or David Ivor
Thomas David - fine
Jack David - Jack too popular and nicknamey, how about John David and you can always use Jack as nickname?

You have fabulous taste in names, I must say!

I have an Isabel and a Charlotte (Isabel would have been an Isabella but I felt like it was a bit long) and my Isabel has the middle name Sophia :). Lucy is lovely too.

I like all of your boys names, I think Lucas is my least favourite and Thomas the best.

Katienana · 24/04/2012 12:23

Aw thanks I have been worried that the names are too popular! John David is a no it is my brother's name.
I think you're right re Daniel David, it's a bit of a mouthful.
What do most people do then, pick 1 girl name and 1 boy name and then they know what they will be calling the baby, or would you wait and see what suits from the shortlist?

Hi, I had to reply to this one, as it is so similar to my own dilemma. (I started a thread on here yesterday about our struggle to decide on a name for dd3).
I have to agree that you have great taste in names.... from your shortlist: I am a Lucy, my dd2 is Sophia, I don't know if you're a Katie, but my sister is Katie, and you will see on my thread from yesterday that on my shortlist for dd3 I have Charlotte and Isabella! So I think any of the names that you pick would be a great choice!
I'm afraid I'm not so much help with the boys names, as I have never had to pick one out yet. (From your list I think probably Daniel is my favourite, but they are all good names).

In answer to your question about whether to decide on one name in advance, or whether to wait until baby is born and get to know him/her... In my own experience naming our daughters, we narrowed down to a shortlist of around 3 names before the birth, and then finally decided on the name once the baby arrived. In the case of dd1, we were settled on her name within an hour or two of birth, but with dd2 it took us 3 days to make a final decision. This time around, I'm hoping we can decide within hours rather than days, but it does feel like such a big decision and responsibility to get it right that I wouldn't be surprised if we took a few days again!
Good luck!

I like Lucy best from your list, although prefer Lucille as a full name.

Daniel is lovely.

manicinsomniac · 24/04/2012 15:35

Oooh, this is one of the only lists I've seen where I like all of them.

My favourites would be Isabella Anne and Jack David

Angellight · 24/04/2012 16:18

Like all the girls with Charlotte my favourite. Like Daniel and John from boys list , dislike Lucas.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 24/04/2012 16:39

Nice names.

Charlotte and Lucy are my favourites. This is possibly coloured by the fact that I was at a baby group today with four Sophia's (out of about 10 girls) though, so ask me another day and I may feel differently!

Lots of Isabella's seem to get shortened to Ella these days, which is something to bear in mind - since you can't control the nickname your children end up preferring. The same would apply to Charlotte - I like Lottie as a nickname but am not keen on Charlie, so didn't use it myself.

Not as keen on the boys list, although I love Ivor. I think Ivor David sounds fab.

mummybare · 24/04/2012 18:54

Ooh, I like all the girls' names! For a boy, I think Thomas or Jack would work best if you are using David as a middle name.

toobreathless · 24/04/2012 19:29

Isabella: too popular, will date, I personally don't like Izzy either as a nn (Bella is ok)
Charlotte & Lucy: lovely, elegant, popular BUT always have been so won't date like Isabella.
Sophia: very pretty. My favourite of your four.

Boys:
Daniel: lovely BUT do you like Dan as a nn? & not sure it really goes with David as mn.
Lucas: ok, much prefer Luca & think Luca David flows better.
David: lovely but dislike 'Dave'
Thomas & Jack: nice but uninspiring normal names.

HoldTouchEngage · 24/04/2012 22:20

I 'like' your names - all of them, however i find a few of them a little uninspiring..especially David (daaaaaave!) Maybe i am alone in that?

Sophia is very pretty, but i really have to love nn's of names and i am not keen on soph or sophie...but i LOVE Lottie, or Lotty as a nn for Charlotte, but i couldn't personallu live with Charlie as an nn

and Daniel, very classic, but again Dan or Danny , i'm unsure tbh! x

They are all lovely classic names. They are all very popular though. Except probably, David. I imagine there will be at least one other in the class.

anniemcphee · 25/04/2012 00:39

I like Charlotte Anne and Lucy Anne most.
For a boy I like Lucas (was on my short list but DH vetoed ) most.

mintymellons · 25/04/2012 13:38

Sorry, they're all nice enough, I just find them rather dull

rhibutterfly · 25/04/2012 13:41

my favourites are isabella and lucy and lucas and jack :)

gingertea · 25/04/2012 13:56

These are all lovely, classic names.

Sandalwood · 25/04/2012 13:59

Yep go with a short list - chances are your baby will suitone name more than another. - I know our DD did.

I wouldn't worry too much about using a cousin's name too much either if it's what you both like. (but then, I rarely see my cousins).
