Hi everyone, thanks for your responses to my last thread about the name Molly - it's been useful and other opinions are gratefully received.

I've now come up with a few other names from a good baby name book which I quite like but again would like some input from your good selves about what kind of name they are, how the name is seen, popularity, is it classic/ modern etc as I just don't know.

If it helps, I'm looking for a name that doesn't conjure up any preconceived ideas about our DD or her background.

Thanks again in advance - you have no idea how hepful you all are!

Jasmine
Hannah
Thea
Annie
Beatrice
Emily
Molly

Thea is a lovely name - I don't know anyone called it.

Badgerina · 22/04/2012 14:00

I'm a Hannah! I think you should go with that. You don't here it often, it's a strong name, and a palindrome - WOOP! Grin

Badgerina · 22/04/2012 14:00

Oh my goodness. HEAR not here. Blush

LondonNadiy · 22/04/2012 14:07

Beatrice and Thea will probably conjure up an image, but a nice one! Jasmine will conjure up a less flattering one IMHO - bit on the chavy side nowadays, but Jas and Mina are cute nn. Hannah is very, very, very boring, and every second little girl with a pink bag and blone pigtails is called Emily or Molly! All names will conjure up an image I think, just try and make sure its a good image iyswim!

Annie, Thea and Beatrice are my faves out of that list, definately - I prefer Beatrix personally, more relaxed and feels more up to date and nn Trix, but that's just me! Annie Beatrix / Beatrix Annie / Beatrix Thea / Beatrix Thea Anne(ie) / Thea Beatrix.

Hope I helped!

Jasmine - nice but bit chavvy
Hannah - nice but bit dull
Thea - unusual, not my cuppa tea
Annie - personally I don't like nicknames as names - it should be Anne
Beatrice - my favourite from your list
Emily - too popular
Molly - I also like this but may be popular too

MagsAloof · 22/04/2012 14:14

Jasmine - pretty, but prefer Yasmin
Hannah - OK, a bit dll
Thea - lovely
Annie - lovely, maybe short for Anna or Anya?
Beatrice - nice, becoming more popular
Emily - some will say boring but I like it a lot.
Molly - not madly keen. Prefer Polly.

Stellan · 22/04/2012 14:24

Jasmine - I quite like this but I prefer Jessamine. Jasmine may suffer a bit from being bastardised by creative spellers trying to be unique (Jazmyn and so on).

Hannah - Excellent choice.
Thea - I like this but I prefer Theodora.

Annie - As a nickname, lovely. Anne or Anna are great full names.

Beatrice - Excellent choice.

Emily - Excellent choice.

Molly - A little childish but still pleasant. I think I prefer Holly which is more of a name in its own right as opposed to a nickname.

How about Freya?

Collision · 22/04/2012 17:07

Jasmine Lots and lots of Jasmines here so too popular for me but love the nn Jazz

Hannah - tis OK but a bit meh!

Thea - Pretty and underused.

Annie - Lovely but might give her the more formal Anna and shorten to Annie so she has a choice when she is older.

Beatrice - Love love love it!

Emily - Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many!

Molly - Tis OK but a bit cutsie for me. Not sure I would want to be called Molly.

Try this....

'All rise for Judge Beatrice Maynard....' (works well)

'This is Beatrice Foster, News at Ten, in the Gulf.....' (works well)

'All rise for Judge Molly Duncan..........' (not as good!!)

Wink

Hannah, Beatrice and Emily are all lovely classic names. Annie is nice as a nickname for something longer such as Annabel. Molly a bit faddy and nicknamey, not keen on Thea either. I like Jasmine, very pretty.

FondleWithCare · 22/04/2012 17:39

Jasmine- like this, pretty without being frilly
Hannah- ok
Thea- nice
Annie- ok, bit nicknamey though, Anna would be better IMO
Beatrice- hate it
Emily- lovely but getting very popular if that concerns you
Molly- not really a fan but it's not bad

MoonHare · 22/04/2012 17:40

From your list I like Thea best, I know of one who is actually Alethea - Thea for short and about 8 yrs old. In fact I really like it.

Then probably Beatrice followed by Hannah, Emily and Annie (though prefer Anna).

Really don't like Jasmine at all and Molly is too cutsie for me, also makes me think of Molly Maids/ Molly Mops the cleaning companies.

I agree with Collision on the 'gravitas' test, what if your DD grows up to be Prime Minister??
