On behalf of my dd. These are her latest choices.

I have a Freddie. His full name is Frederick after my beloved grandad but he's usually Freddie or Fred.

sonniboo · 21/04/2012 20:58

Nothing wrong with them, but they wouldn't be my choices. Thankfully we all have different tastes though Smile.

McKayz · 21/04/2012 21:00

I have a Freddie so obviously I think it's brilliant.
I like Layla and was on my short list but after the few people I mentioned it to started singing 'Layla' at me I changed my mind.

harrietlichman · 21/04/2012 21:04

Dnephew is Freddie - I didn't like it at first but now I love it (it does get shortened to Fred though, not by his mum and dad but by the rest of the family, so that is something to consider)

eatyourveg · 21/04/2012 21:12

I have a Freddie whose full name is Alfred.

EllenParsons · 21/04/2012 21:23

I like them both, but I would prefer to see Freddie with a full name eg Frederick, Wilfred... I think they are completely different styles so would be surprised to see brother and sister Freddie and Layla, but both are nice.

toobreathless · 21/04/2012 21:30

Freddie: lovely, I would personally use a longer name on birth certificate, Frederick or as others have suggested Alfred, Wilfred.

Layla: I strongly dislike sorry. Reminds me of a stripper, much the same as Lola. Clearly a personal thing.

lunamoon · 21/04/2012 21:45

I don't think either are great, not my cup of tea.
Freddy is too nicknamey for me and Layla just reminds me Of Eric Clapton, whom I dislike.

Stellan · 21/04/2012 22:33

Nothing wrong with Freddie as a nickname but as a whole, it's a bit too 'on trend' for me and may date when the fad blows over.

Layla is pretty. A bit of a guilty pleasure name for me as it's not my usual type at all.

BBQJuly · 22/04/2012 00:48

I like Freddie as nickname for Frederick.

Quite like Layla although you might get a bit fed up of everyone saying "as in Eric Clapton?"

LooLilly · 22/04/2012 18:02

Thanks for the views. I will pass them on to dd.

I'm not really keen on either of them. I'm pushing for Pheobe for a girl and George if its a boy.

I'm trying so hard not to be a pushy opinionated Granny but it's sooo hard Grin

Didn't you get the opportunity to name your own children then?

LondonNadiy · 22/04/2012 19:12

Personally, I think both are really quite chavy, Layla very much so. Freddie is OK as a nn, but definitely not as a bc name. Why is your DD not asking herself? I do, however, much prefer your suggestions, but obvs, her baby!

MagsAloof · 22/04/2012 19:15

Like Freddie.

I much prefer the spelling Leila.

mayanna123 · 22/04/2012 19:20

Thankfully we all have different tastes and I think you should respect your dd's own choices. You had her to name, didn't you?

Personally I'm not keen on either of her choices (nor your own suggestions of George and Pheobe), but what I think shouldn't matter - it should be your dd's and her other half's decision imo.

madwomanintheattic · 22/04/2012 19:21

Is Freddie still on trend then? I'm quite surprised, when dd1 was a toddler (10 years ago) it was huge, and there was a whole rash of Freddies via Wilfred etc. they must all be approaching secondary though, so perhaps there's a 'new' trend?

I know a couple of Leila's. It's less obvious that Layla tbh. Don't know any Layla's personally, but it has the same sort of appeal as spelling michaela, 'mikayla'. I know that doesn't make sense, btw.

madwomanintheattic · 22/04/2012 19:22

If you call her phoebe, you might want to spell it correctly.

hubbahubster · 22/04/2012 19:29

Hmm, if my DM had 'pushed' for any name for my DC, it would have pretty much guaranteed that I'd reject it. Thankfully she respects me as an individual too much to behave that way.

Sorry but it's not your decision to make.

tralalala · 22/04/2012 19:45

deffo don't tell her that you did a thread about this unless she asked you as she will be monumentously funked off.

I have never forgotten my mum going on about my name choices. And don't pretend a 'friend' said things either.

Just say oh that's nice no matter what.

McKayz · 22/04/2012 19:49

Your choices aren't as nice as your DDs. It shouldn't be up to you to start asking for opinions on her choices really.

welovesausagedogs · 22/04/2012 20:12

I like Freddie and Layla is alright.

lunamoon · 22/04/2012 20:12

I'm sorry I misread your thread. I actually thought that you are pregnant and your dd is a small child!!!!
Sorry about that.
If it is your dds baby then it is entirely up to her.

thegreylady · 22/04/2012 22:00

I love Freddie-maybe because I know a wonderful 2 yr old with the name :)
layla,Lola,Leila-not so keen

CharltonHairstyle · 22/04/2012 22:36

Both great

Layla was on my list
