Anyone heard of Ailla??

Came across this name a while ago but not sure if the source was reliable! I read it as being derived from a Cornish word meaning 'most beautiful' and think it is pronounced like 'Isla'. But don't want to add to the short list if it's not actually a name or means something else awful! Does anybody know?!

Not spelled exactly like that but there is an Aila at my dd's pre-school. She pronounces it exactly as it's spelled - Ay-la.

My sis has just named her daughter Ayla. Inspiration taken in part from a book written by Jean M Auel called Clan of the cave bear x

My friends little girl is Ayla not sure if that's the same but spelt differently

Bluestocking · 18/04/2012 22:12

I met a little Ayla the other day - her mother said it was partly inspired by the heroine of the Jean Auel books. I think it's pretty. The baby name websites (those well-known sources of irrefutable truth) seem to think it's a Hebrew name meaning "oak tree".

I think Aila/Ayla is lovely and much easier to pronounce than Isla (which I often want to pronounce Ee-sla like Isla Bonita).

I wondered if it might be Welsh, with the double L in the middle.

Hmmm wish I could find where I got it from! Have also come across Aila, think I actually prefer the pronunciation of that or Ayla. Found an old thread on here about Cornish girl's names and there was no mention! Interestingly though a few of them sounded like Welsh names to me ( Taryn, Tegan, Morwenna ) so maybe there's a link?

Delightful name. Ailsa(Scottish) is pretty too.

"We have a niece called Ayla (pronounced Isla)"

I would pronounce Ayla as Ay-la but Isla as Ees-la.
