hi, dc2 due next week and we're having a bit of a wobble on names.

if a girl we have Lois Catherine and if a boy, Ross Allan.

middle names are definite as they are family names.

so what do you think and any suggestions welcome for alternatives? my only criteria are that i like a 'real' name, but one that is not used too often.

DH originally suggested Lois but he is more wobbly than me on it! his suggestions range from things like Hayley and Liam to very quirky made up things!

thanks in advance

they are ok, catherine my favourite of yours. What about josephine catherine or lucy or how about gemma or caroline? Lorna or lydia? I also like Lamorna. Sorry not very good on boys names!! good luck!

Wants3 · 17/04/2012 15:48

Both are lovely names IMO :) I am anticipating the 'wobble' at some point, I think it is all part of the process. Sorry I am unable to suggest any others, I have a very short shortlist myself!

jenfraggle · 17/04/2012 15:57

I like local names like Morwenna, Lowenna, Demelza, Kerensa etc. All 'real' names but as I'm assuming you are not Cornish, they probably aren't common in your area.

jenfraggle · 17/04/2012 15:58

Should have stated those are all girls names, I think Ross Allan sounds lovely and can't think of an alternative at the moment :)

DuelingFanjo · 17/04/2012 16:08

Are you pronouncing it the Welsh way (loy-s) or as lowis?
I love the Welsh way.

scarletfingernail · 17/04/2012 16:12

I really like Lois. A strong sounding girl's name that's not heard of too often. I've met one under 5 called Lois in the last 3 years.

I also like Ross, I love Liam enough to use it myself, but sadly it doesn't sound right with my surname.

Not keen on Hayley - sorry.

I think that if they're the names that you've liked throughout your pregnancy you should stick with them.

pommedechocolat · 17/04/2012 16:13

Abigail? Heehee

I like both names.

I think you like James that can't be abbreviated and are not classic/popular.

Others I can think of:

Tess
Esme
Jude
Noah

Struggling now will keep on thinking!
Nate

pommedechocolat · 17/04/2012 16:13

James = names!

snapcruncher · 17/04/2012 17:03

thanks all!

i tried for Nathan last time but DH wasn't keen. :)

i didn't fancy Hayley either...i misheard him as Eilidh which i thought was better. Grin

i forgot we had also considered Heather for a girl?

it wouldn't be the Welsh pronunciation dueling think that would confuse folk up here. :)

I like Lois and its quite unusual but not odd/ unknown. Not so keen on Ross but not enough to dislike it if you know what I mean? What about

Jacob Allan
Joseph Allan
Robert Allan
Although I appreciate they might not be that unusual. Will have a think and come back.

MagsAloof · 17/04/2012 17:32

I love Lois Catherine. What a beautiful, simple yet classy name. Heather is pretty, too, but Lois is hard to beat.

Not keen on Ross, sorry, Dated and dull. Liam is better.

Aidan?

snapcruncher · 17/04/2012 18:02

yeah Ross is just ok for me. hence the wobbling!

ninjachipmunk you are spot on! Joseph and Jacob rejected by DH along with some others. :)

boys names are hardest for some reason.

Chad?

snapcruncher · 17/04/2012 19:52

i think I'm too boring for Chad!

Love Lois Catherine!

Ross is ok, iykwim, how about

Fergus
Magnus
Joel
Fraser
Elliot

?

snapcruncher · 17/04/2012 20:44

Jen your Cornish names are nice, but I guess they would raise a few eyebrows up here! :)

Love Elliot - another DH no though.

I know a wee Fraser so that's out.

Don't think I could quite pull off Fergus/Magnus somehow.

Would quite like a Scottish name, but after several threads on here have gone through loads!

Ellis?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/04/2012 21:15

Not over-fond of Lois.

I really like Ross Alan.

Chad is a bloomin' horrible name imho.

freerangeeggs · 17/04/2012 21:16

Lois is lovely and Catherine is beautiful with it. Ross Allan is also a great name.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 17/04/2012 21:37

Alastair/Alistair/Alasdair
Donal
Calum
Euan
Niall
Dougal
Cameron

I'm not so keen on Ross but that's because I associate it with a specific person, iyswim.

snapcruncher · 17/04/2012 21:44

that's what rules out a lot of names for me too - annoying!
