Like Jonah, but not...

My son's middle name is Jonas. It was our second favourite name, and the only other name we could agree on.

Now, I'm pregnant again ? it's VERY early days, so I've a long way to go... but my fingers are crossed and I'm so excited ? and the only boy's name we like is Jonah.

Now, we don't really use DS1's middle name, but I think it might be too much to have Jonas and Jonah

so my options are...

  1. Do it anyway (Just don't want him to feel he had a 'recycled' name)
  2. Change DS1's middle name, and pretend it was a typo... (kidding)
  3. Hope mumsnetters can find me something I love as much. An obvious choose would be Noah, but that's off the table.

Of course, it may be a girl. (I've got a great girl's name Grin )

What do you all reckon?

Jonah and Jonas

If they were both first names then no, but like that I don't really see a problem at all. I can't see why a child would feel wronged by their name being similar to siblings mn at all. Besides mn get used next to never- I wish I could use them as first names for dc4- we've run out of names we love!

Do it Grin

My mum's (unisex!) middle name was given to her brother as a first name and it's never been a problem..

MickyDodger · 15/04/2012 18:03

I can barely remember my own childrens middle names, I certainly haven't a notion what any other childrens are, not even my neices and nephews.
I wouldn't even think about it. And Jonah is a great name. Wink

JustHecate · 15/04/2012 18:05

Josiah?

My great nephew is called this. I think it's lovely.

Ja9 · 15/04/2012 18:08

Funny when i read the thread title i came on to post Jonas! I think you can get away with jonah if jonas is just a middle name....

(i LOVE jonas btw)

Ja9 · 15/04/2012 18:10

Yes, also love josiah and joel. Xx

puzzletree · 15/04/2012 18:17

Oh I was going to say Micah too, or Noah. I love Jonah, it's one of my top choices for DS3 due soon, still have to convince dp. I don't think I'd use another son's middle name as his first name, it would feel weird to me personally. But you rarely use your middle name in real life (unless you choose to) so I don't think the outside world would care or even notice. Use it if you can't find an alternative you love, it's so hard to name multiple children. Wish I'd known in advance I'd be having 3 sons, I'd have planned names a bit better I think!

I'm sorry this isn't going to be much use, but I love Noah, jonas and Jonah! Grin

Biscuitbreaker · 15/04/2012 20:35

Thanks!

I was thinking that the idea of using Jonah anyway would be universally slapped down! As it hasn't, I reckon we may well just go for it! I do like a lot of the other suggestions, but my husband isn't keen. Although there's time for them to grow on him!

Please use Jonah, it's my favourite boys name but DH wouldn't let me use it. And I've just watched The Killing 2 and am now very smitten with the name Jonas! Incidentally, how you do you pronounce that? Is it the Scandinavian way (Yonas) or with a hard J like Jonah?

gafhyb · 17/04/2012 18:31

I like Jonah

Or what about

Asa
Levi
Evan

Biscuitbreaker · 17/04/2012 21:48

EnglishMummy - we use a hard J, like Jonah.

I think it's fine, no one uses middle names anyway and it's not as if it the same nam it is different.

Other names:
Felix
Arlo
Oscar

Go for it, most people are very unaware of middle names these days and if they are similar, so what. I once went out with a guy called John Michael Mary (confirmation name!!!!), his brother was Michael John Mary Grin

louisdog · 18/04/2012 14:32

I would say go for it as well.

SIL used up their two favourite boys' names on DS1 and then named DS2 with DS1's middle name as a first name and it has never been a problem.

People don't bother much about middle names, and it's important to have first names you love.
