Lucy Catherine or Lucy Kate?

We don't know the sex of this baby yet, but if it's a girl we want to name her Lucy after my grandma. We thought it would be nice therefore if her middle name was one of Dh's grandmas, and have opted for Catherine, who was always called Kate. So should we use Catherine or Kate? I actually prefer Kate, but I don't know if Lucy Catherine "sounds" better somehow? Opinions please? Surname begins with P if it helps.

I love Lucy Kate and if the idea is to name your daughter after a family member it makes more sense to me to give her the name the person was called rather than the long version however 'correct' that is.

I know a lot of people will disagree feeling that Catherine sounds more grown up etc but I think as it is a middle name it is even less of an issue (at least for me) than it would be as a first name.

They are both beautiful names; you can't go wrong with either.

Lucy Catherine is much more elegant. And it doesn't stop you calling her Lucy Kate :)

Prefer Lucy Kate and echo the sentiment above about using the name that his grandma used. Lovely names - well done, it's so difficult.

Kate is the abbreviated form of Catherine anyway, so go for either. People will assume Kate is short for Catherine whether you like it or not.

I like both.

If it were a first name I would probably say use Katherine and call her Kate to give options, but it is not as if middle names are really used to get shortened, so in this case definitely Lucy Kate (if you prefer Kate or are naming for someone known as Kate)

Lucy Kate is nice but it sounds a bit 'lite' to me, just this side of too cutesy. Lucy Catherine, otoh, is extremely elegant.

LaDiDaDi · 13/04/2012 18:53

Both are lovely, go with whichever works best with your surname.

FondleWithCare · 13/04/2012 19:23

I think Lucy Kate sounds better.

CPtart · 13/04/2012 19:38

Lucy Catherine without a doubt

I think Lucy Catherine, and i say that as a Katherine who uses the nn Kate.

I am therefore biased :) and think both Catherine and Kate are great names however I think Kate is not really a suitable name for a middle name.

It takes what are 2 beautiful names (lucy and kate) and makes it sound a bit double barrelled to me, e,g. from the ellie mae/ellie grace school etc. Like you were trying to get it to roll from the tongue - i guess it is the one syllabul thing, as like i say i love the name Kate - I am a Kate :)

And i agree Lucy Catherine is very elegant - she will thank you for it.

Lucy Catherine is gorgeous. Lucy Kate is too folksy.

HerRoyalNotness · 15/04/2012 02:34

Lucy Kate sounds better to me

I vote Lucy Catherine, as it does sound more elegant but at the same time doesn't stop you calling her Lucy Kate.. Best of both worlds!
