Opinions on Ariadne.

So although I'm only 26 weeks pregnant I'm so excited about names and DH won't even entertain a conversation about them, let alone give any suggestions! This is our third DC and will be our last so I don't want to not use a name I love and live to regret it.

My favourite name for a DD at the moment is Ariadne? What is the general consensus? Don't be afraid to be frank, the likelihood is that DH will veto it anyway.

Likewise what are your opinions on August for a boy? This would probably be used as a middle name but is another of my loves!

You're joking right? Ariadne is a bit up its own arse but not hideous. August though! Seriously?

PineCones · 12/04/2012 18:13

I like August for a middle name.
Ariadne too close to arachnid. Though would remind of that novelist in those agatha Christine books. So overall,
OK but not earthshattering IMO.

Up it's own arse wouldn't go with the names of our other three DC in that case, they seem to get a bashing on MN for the opposite reason!

I like ariadne but really don't like August!

NettoSuperstar · 12/04/2012 18:16

Love Ariadne.

FamiliesShareGerms · 12/04/2012 18:20

Love Ariadne. Why August rather than Augustus (if you must go down that route)?

PineCones · 12/04/2012 18:26

Christie

I hate auto correct!Angry

DesperatelySeekingDistraction · 12/04/2012 18:30

Love Ariadne. Would have it on the list for DC2 but not brave enough. Reminds me of the book "Snow Spider" by Jenny Nimmo(?) that I read when I was young.

August sounds more of a girls name to me.

hattymattie · 12/04/2012 18:34

Love Ariadne - but Ariadne's thread! August is Augustus or Gus! Not keen really.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/04/2012 18:36

Ariadne is lovely.

Don't like August at all, sorry.

oikopolis · 12/04/2012 19:24

Ariadne is nice in theory. i would be concerned that people wouldn't know how to pronounce it. if you're in a hipster-ish sort of area, you wouldn't have much trouble though.

August is dreadfully hipster to me. Augustus makes me think of Augustus Gloop. So no to both of those i think.

AThingInYourLife · 12/04/2012 19:27

Ariadne is lovely.

August... not so much

catsareevil · 12/04/2012 19:28

I think that Ariadne is a brilliant name for a girl.
I'm not really keen on August for a boy, but maybe OK as a middle name.

seeker · 12/04/2012 19:29

Ariadne will be Arry in a heartbeat!

DustyDen · 12/04/2012 20:11

Beautiful! I'd love to use it.

Stellan · 12/04/2012 20:45

Well, I see I'm in the minority but I really like August.

As for Ariadne, it's a bit clunky for my own tastes. Also sounds like Arietty from The Borrowers to me. I think my main issue is that it sounds like someone has swallowed the first letter, iyswim.

Winkly · 12/04/2012 20:51

Ariadne will forever remind me of the giant spider in Knightmare.

MadMonkeys · 12/04/2012 21:56

Ariadne makes me think of arachnid too.

upahill · 12/04/2012 22:01

That is my cousin's name.
She is known as Addi.
We all like that as well

Her DH calls her Ads and that is ok as well

Angelico · 12/04/2012 22:02

This is hilarious! Not in a bad way - but when I was at school I was madly into Greek mythology and LOVED the name Ariadne. Told my mum if I had a daughter I was going to call her Ariadne. She pointed out that in NI it would be shorted to 'Arry (imagine broad Belfast accent). Kind of stripped the magic out of it :o

But I am pregnant at the minute and my parents call the bump Ariadne :o

Angelico · 12/04/2012 22:02

Oh - and sorry but August for a boy - no likee!

CherryBlossom27 · 12/04/2012 22:06

I really like the name Ariadne, I remember learning about Ariadne and the Minotaur at primary school :) I like the idea of shortening it to Ads as opposed to Arry!

Not really keen on August tbh

kumquatsarethelonelyfruit · 12/04/2012 22:06

I love them both.

yellowflowers · 12/04/2012 22:19

Ariadne also makes me think of spiders. Is there a famous ariadne in literature who is a spider?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/04/2012 11:04

Ariadne helped Perseus escape the Minotaur by giving him a thread so he could find his way out.

Arachne was a spinner who was turned into a spider, iirc.

Ariadne has nothing to do with spiders.
