What do you think to the name 'Idalia'?

It is pronounced 'Id-AR-lee-ah'. I really love it, but could really do with some opinions. How does it sound? Is it 'clunky' (my DH says so)? Do you think it's a pretty name? Please be honest - I can take it!

Thanks Smile

I know an Idalya. Now 10. It's quite a sweet name.

Thanks Saffron. Could I ask you what is the nationality of the family?

TBH it sounds a bit made up to me and reminds me of The Black Dahlia which is not a good association.

It doesn't sound clunky to me though and I do like the way it sounds.

Thanks Whitershadeofpale, it's actually Hispanic. I am glad you like the way it sounds Smile

I like it written down but my instinct would be to pronounce it Id-AY-lia

FondleWithCare · 12/04/2012 10:08

I haven't heard it before but it has a nice sound to it.

ripsishere · 12/04/2012 10:14

Sounds like a lentil dish to me.

I think Idyllica is better Grin

Marie the Dad is Australian and I think the Mum is Malaysian. They made the name up (or found it) to honour one of the grandmothers who is called Ida.
They pronounce it with a long A. Sort of rhymes with Australia!

Tis not the prettiest name ever.

What do you think of Oriele? My DH's italian grandma's name. I think it is beautiful butIHaveTwoBoysAndWantNoMoreSoIcanNeverUseIt

mumbaisapphire · 12/04/2012 13:03

My MIL is Idalina - she's Portuguese. Pronounced Ee-dar-lina.

ErikNorseman · 12/04/2012 13:27

Are you latin at all? If not, it's a no. Pretentious and will not be pronounced nicely. As a spanish name for a spanish child it's very pretty.

Stellan · 12/04/2012 14:08

I thought it was pronounced like Ida so something like eye-da-lee-uh. Your pronunciation is prettier but I still think it's a bit of a mouthful and doesn't really roll of the tongue very well. With familiarity, I could grow to like it more but it's not one I'd use. I just find it hard to say.

sparkle12mar08 · 12/04/2012 14:15

Really don't like it sorry. It's clunky sounding and ugly looking, ripe for differing/miss pronunciations, looks as if it belongs to the 'made up' style of names. There are no positives for me, sorry.

Danceswithdragons · 12/04/2012 14:43

Its a Spanish name, so fine if you are Spanish and preferably living in Spain, otherwise in the UK it will forever be mis-pronounced and mis-spelt.
I think that it is rather pretty though.
